How old were you when you got your first stang?

I bought my 1988 5.0 LX on March 18, 1988 when I was 18 years old.

Prior to the Mustang I was driving a 2.8 v6 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme that I crashed and rolled the insurance money into TJX stock that grew enough so I only had a $3K loan. The car was ordered from the factory and I waited about 6 months for it to be built. I bought it for $10,700.

At the time I was hanging with a handful of guys who did a lot of street racing. One guy had a cherry 1970 454SS 5-spd (4-spd?), another had a tweaked GN, and 4 other guys had Mustangs, each a different color - one guy had a 6 month old blue LX with 50,000 miles that we joked were put on 1/4 mile at a time.

It was the beginning of the muscle car era and there were NO parts for Mustangs. I bought mine stripped except for rear defrost, tint windows, 3.08s, and the 5.0, no power or A/C, hatch for the extra 45 lbs over the back wheels (the mags at the time said this was better for the strip). Once I got the car I couldn't bring myself to beat it, but that didn't stop me from tweaking it and the car did a lot of sitting and soon became a fair weather driver and to this date has never seen a winter. I put it away just after I got out of college in 1992 and didn't take it out of storage until March 2007. Today it has just over 17,000 original miles.

now you know the rules...you gotta post pics with a decription like that...btw what did an 5.0 88 LX cost new?

Is that the right year?

13 1/2 lol and a 95gt I played around with, i drove it around alot when I was 14-15 and then I sold it and bought an svo when I was 15 (worst mistake evar). Then a 86gt when I was 16 saved all summer and paid for it with cash (felt good lol) then that pos was rusting away, my dad bought a 93 notch with 20k on the clock most perfect notch id seen, then I bought my 90 7up vert, drove it for about 8 months and then toatled it, lost my license. So now i have a couple more months left and im buying rpm182000's wrecked 93 gt vert, and am going to fix er up for a while and let my dad drive it, and then ill drive it when my license are reinstated and then i will buy a honda to drive everyday, like before when I had my 86gt.... so 5 for me in 4 1/2 years, ive learned alot so far!!

ive had 3 cars in the past 3 years...4 if you count the ranger we bought just to paint and sell....

Something you don't see with the kids of today I'm afraid. It ain't over till one, or both of them are topped out. And they wonder why there are so many street racing related deaths. At least we knew when to let off, not to mention back then, racing went from a dead stop from one light, to the next, not a 40mph roll in traffic. :nonono:
Exactly. This was well before the reckless, all or nothing type mentality you see nowadays. I realize street racing has always been illegal but it's never been so vilified like it is today. Unfortunately its with good reason.

bout a 4cyl POS for $1000 when i was 16.. turned it in to this

16, I got a used 79 hatchback with the funky TRX metric wheels. It had a 302 with a 2 barrel carb. I spent all my money on it and put a Holly 4 barrel carb and manifold, headers, dual exhaust. Maybe 140 hp, but still too much for a 16 year old, 4 tickets in one year. Lost my license because of that car.

this is true, kids wont even roll race from a 40 anymore, they just smash it when your alongside them or do a flyby and not even look at you, weaving through traffic the whole time. screw that, ill leave that **** for the birds. ive roll raced many times, but never with traffic around, and only with people i know, or at least i know are serious and know what they are doing. and i wont ever take it past 4th gear

Kids are reckless. its a fact. That was me 3 years ago when i wrapped my first stang (cobra to) into a pole. Im only 20 now but all i needed was a slap in the face telling me im not the man and im not invincible. I had a sweet car and it only took me a few seconds of carelessness and showing off to lose it all. I worked my ass off to get that thing. On top of playing school sports and i tried my best to work 20 hrs a week since i was 13 to buy the thing. Thank god i put collision on it. I couldn't afford the insurance so i had to sell it and now some a$$clown owns it and ripped off some of the body parts for another body kit and it looks awful. I think he swapped the original rims of R rims to! I still kick myself in my own ass about this one. :nonono:

you should always try different cars. I dont know that I can actually count all the ones I've had just the memorable ones (76 Monte Carlo ran 13's...not fast now but in 1990 it was especially for a fully loaded street car from the 70's, 1972 GTO i miss that car, 80 Capri first car POS beater, tried doing the Euro tuner thing with a 90 Jetta GLI {yawn} Now I have this 87 vert, I cant count all the 4x4s ive had not to mention plain old daily drivers.)
