How tall is your air cleaner?

Greetings,
I rebuilt my 302 last year and installed one of the generic 14" air cleaner housings with chrome lid and 2" tall filter from National Parts Depot. I want to get a filter with more surface area (...taller) but don't know if I have any room.
What height filter do you use? Do you have a special air cleaner housing?
My combo is this:
302 w/ Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, 600 CFM Edelbrock (Carter) carb... I do have the hood insulator in place as well.

How tall can I go with a new filter before I run into problems w/ hood, insulator interference?

302 in a 67 coupe. Drop base 14" Moroso air cleaner with 3" tall filter, no insulation though. Holley 600 on an Edelbrock single plane Streetmaster intake.

OK, I found 'drop bases' at Summit Racing. There are a couple versions... a 1.25" drop and a .875" drop. There are several more 'raise bases'...

Is it save to assume that a 7/8" drop base combined with a 3" filter instead of a 2" would yield roughly the same overall height?

Before I went to EFI, I used a couple of balls of Playdo stacked on the stock air cleaner to give me a measurement of usable space on all sides of clearance. I ended up using one of those triangle air cleaners for clearance, after adding a mid rise Motorsports intake, this is the one I used. http://store.summitracing.com/partd...1002&N=115+4294925239+4294839057&autoview=sku

The drop base cleaner is like an upside down bowl that just drops the base area the filter sits in. I looked on summit but could not find one.

holley 750
1" phenolic spacer
3" K&N airstream...

BARELY clears under a FG Shelby hood, by about 0.25-0.30 inches according to clay blob.

I have the insulator on my hood so I was thinking of putting a series of wooden shims on top of the air cleaner lid and then placing a piece of masking tape up side down on top of it. If it sticks to the insulator when I close the hood, then I know I can't go much (any) higher.
There is a round hole in the insulator in the middle already... I think it's the air cleaner hold down stud poking it...

Would a 1.25" drop base clear all the linkages, etc on a '69 (cable throttle...). If so, I'll get one, along with a 3" K&N and be done with it.

I got the generic 14" Edelbrock Drop base cleaner that they sell at autozone, and got a fram Air Hog filter put in. It is on a Holley 4160 Style carb with electric choke. I had to modify the bowl vent for clearance, but other than that it fits BARELY.

I think the ones at autozone all have the 1 inch drop base. I looked them up on ebay, and they all seem to have the 1 inch drop base with 3 inch element

It's on a 66 but it's a full foot from the engine to the top of the aircleaner with no problems, stock hood - tcp motor mounts.

I think the clay trick works best. I went with the 1.75 drop on my 68 with ther same intake carb and 1 in spacer. I also have a 4 in air cleaner.

FWIW, I have a 14" Moroso drop base (not sure of the drop off hand, but I can find out) and a 2" filter. I've always had to use a 1" space for clearance (I think it was the throttle linkage that gave me problems). And just yesterday I switched over to an electric choke carb and I don't have any clearance issues (still using the 1" spacer).

I have a 600 cfm edelbrock with an electric choke. 1.25 drop base with a 4" tall K and N from Summit Racing. No prob with the choke in the way. Got the edelbrock air cleaner from advance auto! (my job, uber discount )

That's a database of what setups people have been running. It may prove helpful it may not, but if you guys haven't put your particular setup in there...please do. I really need to add a field for drop bases.

I run a 2.5" K&N inside a repro hi-po lid and base. The intake is a vic jr with a 1" spacer and a demon carb. Don't know yet if it will clear my 67 Shelby style hood as its out being painted. If not then I can reduce the spacer and/or change to a drop base.

I am running a 3 inch filter with a 1.25" drop base (K&N) ontop an RPM Air Gap intake with a holley carb with an electric choke. The choke fits without a problem. I have a very small amount of clearance between the hood and the top of the filter, perhaps less than 1/4 inch or less.
