I bought a 2nd had rebuilt 351w shortblock, and I want to run a larger cam. I know the piston is a flat top with 4 2cc valve releifs. I am running 2.02/1.6 world windsor sr. heads, and I want to make sure the cam I order will work without hitting the pistons. What is the best way about figuring out whats the biggest lift cam I can run w/o hitting pistons?

Shortblock has to be assembled, including the cam. You have to get checker springs (cheap and probably easy to find) and then get the valve springs off, and put the checker springs on. Then bolt the head on (we did it with no gasket, to be sure) . To note, before bolting the head on, place some clay on the valves or on the pistons (we used the pistons, idk if using the valves would even work), then bolt the head down, and rotate one engine cycle. Also set it to TDC before starting, and use the number 1 piston. Thats an easy way to set it up right. Now Im not sure if its recommended to do it on all the pistons, or whether they will be set if you check just one!

i was thinking of doing something similar to that with an old smaller cam I have sitting in the garage and measuring the difference of the clay, but I was wondering if there is an easier way.

Also are the checkers springs even necessary? I don't understand how that would be any different(other then less spring pressure) when checking p2v clearance.
