How to identify T5 without tag

ok so my shop teacher had a t5 layin around that he let me HAVE. Yes i know im lucky, but i dont know if its a 4cyl or an 8cylinder t5 or if it even came out a mustang. Ive had my t5 out of my car a few times and this one doesnt look any different (as in the input shaft looks the same has the same number of teeth etc.) one thing i noticed different is that this tranny has a rubber mount looking thing mounted to the 3 holes under the shifter. Mine didnt have this. Any help would be appreciated.

PS i know how to tell if its a world class or not by pulling the t/s housing and the cover and checking the synchros.

look on the tranny cover for a little circle with like a sunflare design and a number inside. this will tell you what year it was made i believe, then you can go from there
 
measure the snout on the input shaft. the part that goes into the pilot bearing.if it's a v-8 it should measure around .668 or somewhere around there. a t-5 from a 4 banger measures .590 thousandths. start from there then there's some other clues as to if it's a world class or not, as metioned by euphoric 306
 
you can tell if it is a world class or not by looking at the very front of the transmission, just off to the left of the input shaft bearing retainer, there is a bearing cup which encases one of the cluster shaft bearings, it should say Timken on it. If it's not a world class then it will just be a plain metal cup similar to a freeze plug installed backwards

Without a tag it's hard to tell the specific year but there will be a few clues. If the top cover has a nuetral safety switch installed then most likely it is a 1990 or newer T-5 with the 300ft-lb torque rating. I believe they started installing the nuetral safety switches in 1991.

There is also two different slyles of 5th gear/reverse gear shift lever assembly's

If the side of the case has a sort of round looking dowel below and to the right of the reverse (backup light) switch, then you have a T5 with the later shift lever mechanism found in T5's built in 1992 and later.

The input shaft length will also determin whether it is intened for the later SN-95 cars 94-95 used a longer input shaft.
 
COuntergear numbers will give it away, but you'll have to disassemble the trans for that

045 is 4-banger
052 is 85.5-89 265 ft-lbs torque
062-068 is 90+ 300 ft-lbs
070 2.95 Z-spec 330 ft-lbs

As for 4-banger or 5.0 from outside, simply measure the input shaft. 0.668" is V8 and 0.59" is 4-banger.

Also, check the outside of the tranny casing for a circle with a number inside it. This is the year the part was cast in. This is common for a lot of parts cast in metal or plastic. You'll notice a lot of the plastic trim peices of the car have this circle on the backside.

To tell WC from NON-WC

WC use a 2-color Timkin race like this

Nuetral safety switches began appearing on t-5's in 1985. Not sure if it came on the 1985 non-WC but i have a 1985.5 WC t-5 with one in the cover.

Well i know than on 86-later t-5's the NSS was used to signal the EEC that the trans was in nuetral so it could begin dumping codes to a reader.

Unsure what it's use was in 85, but i have an 85.5 t-5 with one in it that was plugged in.

or buy a v-8 pilot bushing and see if it fits the end
 
awesome you guys are great. It looks like i have a world class from around 87. All i had was a tape measure to guage the diameter of the input shaft but it looks like its an 8 cyl tranny. Im hoping it is anyways. Ill get a micrometer or some calipers and find out for sure. Thanks.
