How to remove Harmonic Balancer

Hey guys, I need to get my Harmonic Balancer off but I don't have the tool. How does a harmonic balancer puller work? I know how it attatches with the 3 bolts and all. Is it a socket adapter? What im getting at is does the HB have to be pulled off or twisted off? I want to see if there is a way for me to get this thing off without it till later. Any remedies that you guys know to this problem let me know.
 
You get the puller that uses bolts, not the ones that pull from the outside :nono: With mine I can only use two bolts but no problems. Remove the bolt form the center (15/16"ths) and remove the washer and then put the bolt back in. Use the puller and try to hold the enigne still, it will try to spin, so leave it in gear. (park in an auto) Penetrating oil seems to help.

Screw the bolts into the threaded holes in the balancer,loosen the balancer mount bolt until it is almost all the way out. Leave about 3/8" of thread still engaged. This gives the balancer puller center bolt something to ride on instead of the threads at the end of the crankshaft. Then put the balancer puller center bolt in and crank away until the balancer moves to the bottom of the balancer mount bolt.

AutoZone and some other auto parts stores will rent/loan one at low cost. Average price is $17-$25 if you want to purchace one to add to your toolbox. It is usefull for lots of other puller jobs as well, such as steering wheels.
 
i also use 2 bolts.

two bolts thread in, then there is a long main bolt with an arrowhead which goes where the bolt was, most likely has a 3/8" adapter. you tighten it, which pulls the piece back and pulls the balancer off. kind of weird to describe, but its really simple.

they only cost about 9 dollars also.
 
also, some of the removal kits include/incorporate an installation tool. neat in my book.

i also could only get two bolts on when pulling it.

the balancer is keyed so it doesnt twist off. i used a crowbar to get mine off and it just popped right off without any real effort. no damage was done to either it or the crank. have fun.

i am glad this worked for you, but i would not recommend it, especially since one can be loaned a tool to do it. stockers often come off easily - but the replacements often dont like to slide right on at all (another reason the install tool, which was part of my removal kit, was nice to have).

Red, i know this worked for you, but i would hate to see someone mess something up doing it this way. :cheers:
 
"i used a crowbar to get mine off..." Not a good idea at all especially since the balancer is a basically two pieces of steel sandwiched by rubber that acts as a dampener for torsional vibrations. Prying it off can damage the rubber which kind of defeats the purpose of having the dampener on there.

AutoZone will loan you the tool for FREE in these parts - you simply leave them a small refundable deposit. They return your money when you return the tool. I bought a cheap Chinese puller off the discount tool table at my local Ford dealer for $6.

yep, thats what me and my dad did when pulling off his on his 351w, works like a charm. We ended up buying the one after a few engines, well worth it :nice:
