how to turn the crankshaft?

can i get by rotating teh crankshaft without buying a special tool? what tools to i need?

IIRC, its either a 17mm or 18mm bolt. So get a socket and a large ratchet or breaker bar and go to it.

is that with the crank pulley off? im doing this to turn it to check the valve clearance with the headswap.

No, thats with the pulley. Not sure how to do it without the pulley on. The way I explained is how I rotated mine for my camswap.

If you've got room to move it (and wheels on), put it in gear and move it back and forth until you get where you need to go...easier with the plugs out so there's no compression.

nick, did you put the pulley back on temporarily in order to turn it? how did u do it

Why can't you just leave the pullie off, but put the bolt back into the crank? Then use the socket and ratchet to turn it. I think that's how I did it on my '91.
