03 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6
I'm going to be replacing the cam position synchronizer. I've read the official steps and watched some videos and there is some confusion.
In the steps it calls for a special "tool" which is a plastic cap that goes on top of the synchronizer where the CMP sits. It also states it needs to be 26 or 56 degrees from the front of the engine while cylinder #1 is at TDC.
Do I need the tool? I bought brand new Motorcraft CMP and Synchronizer but neither came with the alignment tool. I can either but another synchronizer that comes with the tool or I can spend $40 to get a kit that comes with 4 different ones. The Synchronizer and CMP were already $170 combined and I'm finding it hard to justify spending $40 on a couple pieces of plastic. As for which direction it's supposed to point, I've seen videos and forums where people say to mark the way it's facing with a sharp. The issue is thag the gears will catch and rotate the way it's facing, plus many of them have the sensor facing a completely different direction. How to I account for this?
Thanks!
