i dont know why but it is steaming underneath where my transmission is, its so hot i get burned just touching the top of the ashtray cover, could there be some insulator mssing? i believe i have a stock shifter...
is it steaming and hot? smokey? burning smell? need a little more details.. have you pulled the center console up? could be cigarette lighter, light, worn insul on wires, live wire.. etc!
boot would def help, keeps the heat from sneeking up while stopped. otherwise air underneath would brush it way. regardless i think if you get a boot that will help. i noticed the same thing when i drove my car w/o the boot. i was replacing the center console and shifter. the base got a bit hot, heat transfers and just think of it like heat traveling up the handle of a hot pan. get a rubber boot seal should solve the prob and also keeps debri out.
If you pull out your console you'll be able to see right through the floor board to the ground. There are a few small openings where the e-brake cables are routed. My '89 gets hot there and my '99 did too. Only thing I could suggest is to pull the console and find some type of flexible insulation to put down in there. I know Home Depot they sell some tar based material that is like a dynamat type material. I think that may work well so that's what I'm gonna try when I put in my new carpet.
