I guess I don't know how to pump gas

Being that gas squirts all over the place when I "fill up", I guess I don't know how to pump gas (sounds really stupid, but read below).
Someone's gotta know what's going on here. Whenever I get gas, I can't fill it up by applying full pressure to the nozzle handle. If I do, the pump stops like it should, but gas flies up around the hole where the nozzle goes in, and I gotta clean a major mess because the gas runs down the side of the car. It also collects in that space between the body and the tank opening. I've never owned a car that did this before. What gives?

Does it happen on every pump you use? One possibility is that the nozzle is bad another is you aren't putting the nozzle in all the way into the hole and the auto shut off isn't there.

I had the same issue. Maybe the filler neck on our gas tanks are shorter than others?

I fixed mine by listening and letting off at the right time.

Most likely your tank isn't venting when you fill up. I had a bronco that did the same thing because someone took the vent hose out of the filler neck. Maybe yours is gone too? Or maybe it's just kinked... Fix that, and I'm sure you won't have any more problems filling up. On a side note, I could get mine to work at full pressure at *some* pumps by cocking the nozzle to one side. Good luck man! :nice:

hehe i didnt realize that 20cents lower in price would cause me to overflow when i put the usual 20$ in from less than a 1/4 tank... was a mess :bang:

how large are the fuel tanks on 92 GTs?

I have the same problem. Nearly everytime I fill up I gotta be a dick head and use the window washer to get the gas off the paint. Sorry guys for gettin there after me. lol. Where is this air tube?? Thanks

I have to do the same thing in my 92 GT! Ive started putting paper towels around the filler now when I fill up. I have tried every which angle to hold the nozzle and held it 1/4, 1/2, full blast and it doest make a difference it still spills over!

Craps embarassing, huh? Especially when there's a hot chick filling up her car next to you, and all of a sudden "SPLOOOSHHH drip drip drip drip"

my 93 does that also.. no other car ive owned has done this before.. i just listen carefully and dont pull the trigger all the way.

Ever since that started happening, I never hold the trigger all the way and I try to listen, but it never fails for a major amount of traffic to start driving by as it nears full!

I just skimmed throught the post so I hope I'm not repeating anything...but there's a drain hole in the little metal dish between the filler neck and the outside body of the car. Take an airhose and blow it down in there..you'll see it. It often get's clogged with dirt and you never know it's there. That'll keep fuel from overflowing out of that spot and should prevent some of it from running down the outside.
As for the fuel just spewing everywhere...The only time I've ever seen that is when the nozzle is pushed TOO far into the filler neck. Good luck figuring that out though. I've never had a problem on mine. Plus stations down here in Georgia have big rubber circles that block any backspray.
