I hurt my transmission last night

I was heading back from Austin with my friend with a 2000 GT. We were heading up the intersate, and we were racing a bit. Well I shifted into 5th on run, and it grinded BAD. Now a lot of time when I accelerate, I hear this rattling through my shifter, and the shifter vibrates a lot more. GREAT! Looks like my transmission is on it's way out. 2nd has been acting funny for a bit already.

I'm gonna search around for some info on rebuilding T5's. Isn't there a World Class T5, and a G-force T5?

you already have a world class T5. all T5's after 87 or 88 are world class. really if you think you may keep the ol T5 for a while then upgrade to a cobra style pocket bearing.

don't be afraid of rebuilding it yourself, they are really easy and can be done for around $200 + cobra upgrade if you choose.

SOrry to hear that Chris. You have a WC T5. The G-force is built with stronger internals (kinda making the case itself the weak point).

There are also upgraded WC T5's (Aka Cobra spec or Z spec boxes). Then all the other flavors (3000 series Tremecs, the 500/600's et al).

If you DIY, Hanlon sells a video and parts (D&D in Michigan also has parts - not sure if they have the video). And you can go to Tremec's site (they ate up B-W some years ago) to DL the PDF T5 rebuild manual.

I bet Danny has like 20 links for places to visit (and enough discounts so that the place ends up paying you to take the trans). :D

Good luck brah.

All aero 5.0L foxes had WC T5's (WC's actually started in 1985).

Ben, I think you are thinking of the internal upgrades that took place for 1990+ models.

I am realy suprised mine is still around. Mine sounds funky in some gears and has a whine like a mofo.

I thought I was hearing a bad rattle....took off the boot and found my shifter handle was the noise as the bolts were loose.

If anything if you rebuild it look at a stronger input shaft and maybe a diff. gearset/fork setup.

From what I have seen of the tremecs...the older 3550 is now the 500 (from looking at spline and what not specs) they seem to have just re-market-ed it with a diff. name. The biggest issue with them also from what I hear is the t5 input shaft used in the 3550 and I believe the 500 as well, so maybe look for a used 3550 and buy the better input shaft, and I think also in the 500. That or just get the TKO (older ones) or the new 600. The 600 seems to be the "new" re-market-ed TKO.

Just remember the tremec's are heavier and create alot more heat than the t5.

Ben (didn't know your name was Ben! :) ), thanks for the info. I'm definitely not afraid of tackling a tranny rebuild. I LOVE to learn new stuff, and the best way is just to get in there and get your hands dirty.

JT, yea I actually have that manual downloaded somewhere on my computer. I KNEW it would come in handy someday, so I snagged it a while back.

Of the two, the upgraded WC T5, and the G-force, is the G-force stronger?

I'm gonna most definitely stick with the T5, as I don't want to incur the new cost of a whole new tranny, and rebuild kits and parts are dirt cheap and abundant for them.

blksn: Thanks for the info on the tremecs, but I'll probably stick with stock. :) I might take my shifter off and make sure it's still in tact.

if i were you i would try and find a used COBRA T5 from a junkyard and go from there. the cost to upgrade a normal T5 to one with the roller pocket bearing is pretty significant due to the fact you have to buy an input and output shaft.

buy the cobra, get your shift forks and case cryo'd, then invest in a quality rebuild kit. should be good for under $500 and be pretty stout.

good luck, and you will need a rather large pair of snap ring pliers--i prefer straight head vs angle head.

try this out if you haven't already http://ddperformance.com

Ben, so if I find a Cobra T5, all I'll need is the Cobra specific rebuild kit? What do you mean by getting the case and forks cryo'd? (full word please? Tried googling it, but couldn't find anything)
yup, that's the ticket.

cryo--cryogenically freezing stuff. totally up to you, it's not expensive but alot of people argue against the benefits. this is what i have to say about it, a guy at work plays alot of baseball(real stuff--not softball) and he swears by cryo'd alum bats. he showed me a few bats that were cracked and then the same model that had been cryo'd that were perfect.

The G is stronger (the weak point reportedly becomes the T5 case itself), but they aint cheap.

Ben, I have never known anyone who did the cryo treatment - it sure looks like a good idea (I thought there was one perceived downside, but I sure cant remember what it might have been. It could have been an opinion-thing only).

BTW, real baseball is played with wooden baseball bats. :D

Not that I have anything productive, but....

1) I could have sworn G-force now has an updated, stronger case. I don't remember where I saw it, or where I read that they "supposedly" did, but it's just a thought...

2) I argue against cryogenically freezing junk. For more reasons than their "benefits". Ben loves me for it, too. :D

My main arguement it against what it does. They say it makes the molecules closer together or something. They say that they change the density of a metal by cooling it and bringing it back up to temperature. I say bull****.

well in a sense there is.....you can geat a hardened gear set(harder than the one they just sell) or get it proshifted.

i have seen some billet shift forks as well insted of cast, I have also seen a guy i know enlarge the diameter of the hole where the rod goes through to the shift forks, and put a press on bearing on the shifter rod.....worked good, but by the time he got done spending money it wasn't cost effective

The main difference between the new TKO 500/600 and the older ones is that they are much smoother and quieter than the older ones because of reworked internals. I heard some horror storries about the older ones being so notchy and loud, but my TKO-500 was notchy at first but now is just as smooth as my T-5 was and it quieter than it was too.

Form the sound that you are mentioning (I'm guessing its a rrrrrrrrrrrr, roll your toung and see if it sounds similar to your tranny) and if it changes frequency increasing with the rpms, then you prolly have a gear missing some teeth. I took two teeth off of second and it made this sound. I also had a chipped tooth on fifth gear. In which case you will need to buy some gears along with your rebuild kit. Keep that in mind as that could add significantly to the price of the rebuild beyond the cost of the $200 rebuild kit.

Chris, if you wanna use a donor tranny to work on. Just get any T-5 out of a mustang. Here is the key. I got the Z tranny not really much a difference just some minor stuff. Not to mention mine has 182k miles on it and its never been torn apart.

But for real, get the kit from g-force. They have a new stronger 5th gear set in theirs that is better for interstate and will hold 500+hp. They offer everything you will need and have several options for ratios for every gear. They also have awesome synchros (sp.) as well.
