Maybe I should have said "effective gear". It relates to how many turns the tire makes relative to how many turns the drive train makes - follow me? Hold everything else constant and if you run the same car with the two different tire sizes throught the quarter, they will be turning different rpms at the traps. Similar to a gear change.

willys1: I'll be running my '84 Mustang stock in brackets as well. ANYTHING is an improvement on the times I'm running this year. This is my first drag car, right now I'm running my father-in-law's 2000 F-250! It's not super-consistent, but I know I'll be running between 17.50 and 17.70! So anything faster will be an improvement. What do ya think my '84 will do? It's stock... period! No mods whatsoever. It's a standard 5.0 with manual trans. Do you think I'll be able to improve on the 17's LOL? Still, I'll have to pay and do a test/tune again so I can relearn the lights with that car. Right now, with the pick-up, I'm mostly cutting between .010 and .002 (my best time). Dang thing... I gotta leave when the second light comes on! She's awfully slow to react. This car will be WAY different... and a lot more fun hopefully!

Yeah Tom, I undersood that. But adding a 26" tire is gonna 'effectively lower' the 373 to act similar to a 355.

Wouldn't that reduce the rpm at a given speed then?

Just for example:
3:55 & 28" tire @ 100mph = 4,260rpm
3:55 & 26" tire @ 100mph = 4,587rpm

AOD guys: No matter what you do the AOD will give up time to a 5spd...until you start making a lot of power. The AOD takes more power to turn and weighs more. Also, an AOD with a small converter and shift kit is a grenade with the pin hanging out. If you want to run an AOD there are a couple of necessities like an upgraded servo, the drums with extra clutches, and a heavy duty sprag- a good trans cooler is an absolute must!!!!! Don't get me wrong though, I just started racing an AOD (10" /3000 stall) and I love it. I put mine in drive, floor it, and hit the unit and then cruise to the finish line. I run 4.10's with a 28" tall tire and I might have to gear down to 3.73's or 3.90's . I would bet that a mild car with an AOD loses near a half second.

Right. Your original post said adding a 26" tire 'puts more gear in' a 373. That sounded like you meant that the 26" tire makes the 373 act like a 410. When you said more gear, I figured you meant numerically higher. I believe we're on the same page now..
