I have a 67 coupe and want to put at around about 400 horse motor in it. I want to keep the C4 and 8" rear (with a trac-loc 3rd from Ebay). Ive got about $5,000 to spend on a motor and I also need to get away from the old points system. Jasper has a 395cid that puts out 375hp and 425lb-ft for $3500. That just sounds like its alot of motor with no power. Its got a baby cam but it just sounds odd to me Someone help me spend my money

Is it a stock block? RWHP? What else on the motor when they dynoed it? If it's a stock block you can imagine why they are keeping the power at a safe level.
What do you want out of the car/motor?

I know a custom builder who has done a ton of street and race engines for a very reasonable prices. He just got back from Denmark setting up small block 427 for a Vette (they loved his work so much they paid his trip over thereto set up the car) He is just over the border in southeastern PA.
Anyway if you email me I will give you his Email address and you can give him your wish list.
Good luck,
Fred

you only need about 300hp at the fly to run low 13's. You can do that with a pretty mild 289. Most people don't because most people only focus on the engine and pay no attention to the supporting parts that put the power to the ground. A basic 351W will get you there no problem. That jasper engine would be a good street engine, probably has a nice flat torque and would get good gas mileage, as far as 351's are concerned(they all drink too much gas). Personally, if I were you, I'd go for a 331, with a mild hyd. roller cam, maybe a set of trickflow heads, RPM or stealth intake, 650 cfm carb, 1 5/8 longtubes. With a set of 3.50 or higher gears and the right torque converter, you'd be running low 13's driving like your grandma. With an auto trans, I think the 8" will last for a while.

as far as the 8" holding up, 302 coupe is pretty much right, it will hold up fine with an automatic, provided you only use a mild stall convertor and don't run a trans brake or slicks. if you decide at some point you want to go with a brake and/or slicks you can say goodbye to the 8".

engine wise, a 331 is also a good way to go. even a pretty mild stock stroke 5.0 will do what you want, mild street cruiser and 13's. the key is the heads, cam and gears for the most part. of course you don't want an engine that has 8:1 compression or a 2V intake but that's pretty much common sense i think.

Try getting in touch with FPS. They are based in Cali. I bought a short block from them. Great customer service.
