I hear people say the GT40 and explorer are the same, then I hear that they are not. From the numbers I've seen the explorer flows a lot less. If this is true how can they make the same power? I am under the impression that the explorer is not as good. But if it is I might as well sell the Performer I'm about to put on and get an explorer and then use the extra money for more parts. Well maybe not, the explorers are ugly and I can swap on an RPM later. But anyways what is the truth? Hopefully TMoss or someone with some dyno numbers can chime in.

The GT40 tubular, Cobra and Explorer uppers all share the same lower. The lower intake is the bottleneck to flow - that's why they all flow about the same - in the 200-210 cfm range. Tmoss can port the lower so that the combos can flow up in the 250 cfm range. Even unported, for mild combos they work quite well and show great average HP/torque numbers across the range. When revs start to climb above 5500 they begin to run out of breath.

Your information probably came from one source - the 1996 Super Ford article that had the Explorer flowing ~180cfm - it can still be found on the Eddelbrock website. It's totally wrong and has been proven wrong with flow testing and dyno testing over and over. The Explorer is every bit the intake the Cobra/GT40 is.

recognize this?........

The truth is that the GT40 intake looks better than the Explorer, but flows similar.

No, other way around. The GT40 lower and Explorer lower are the same, except for a sensor bung.

The stock Mustang intake is different from both.

they are all the same. the only difference is a personal preference- what style upper looks best to you. i have the tubular upper because i like the way it looks. i have bought the cobra a couple of times because of price but i always didnt like the look. the explorer looks like a beefy stocker but i like it. these gt40/cobra/explorer threads need to be put into a sticky because it is never ending...
