I am leaning towards picking up a jy 5.0HO engine. Probally refresh it a little, maby a little home porting of the heads, things like that. Selling the Camaro and using that money to but a turbokit, probally the Hellion or HP. Would that be a good way to go?

I think it is. I see people spend so much money on H/C/I, strokers, the whole nine yards. Not saying it's worthless, but is seems that the $/hp ratio seems to be in favor of the turbo. Yeah, a nitrous setup is probally initially the cheapest, only about a grand for a good setup, but bottle after bottle, and the risk of getting caught with it hooked up by the law, leans me away from it. Superchargers are nice, but I'm not impressed with the results on stock engines.

I already bought (put most of the money down) a Dart block which Rick has, and I'll still get it, but build it on the side.

I already have a pretty good chassis/suspension setup, and a whole lot of weight reduction. I think this will make a hell of a combo. I have been always quesioning the way to go for a long time, I really feel good about this. Can you belive I was thinking of going F-body? :rlaugh:

Id personally do the turbo but i get stock bottom end to a 306 or 331. The heads i would probabbly not use stock ones but maybe a set of ported gt40's. Sounds like you know what you wanna do. Just dont cheap out like some people and use stock injectors. You wouldnt wanna lean the car out and keep blowing gaskets.

well ive been through a couple combos

stock motor low 13 sec car
stock motor with spray low 12 sec combo
heads/ intake 12.40's
heads/ intake / spray 11.60's

granted they were all fun in there own way , the nitrous was great i never went through too many bottles so it didnt add up ......

then got pulled over one day for no front tag ( fresh paint ) and got busted for opperating vehicle with power adder ...... 5 points and 350 dollar fine .....

so the nitrous was gone after that

now on to better things .....

heads / cam / intake ( on current motor ) and a hellion turbo kit ( in hand )

just need to freshen up the stock bottom end before i opt to get a dart combo .

my vote is for the turbo set up ....youll love it

Don't think you can really beat the HP/$ ratio of a turbo if that's what you're after. I'd also agree that you may want to step up to a slightly better head; GT40 irons are so cheap, you'd be foolish not to. Good luck.

Turboes are nice in the fact they make big power, even woth stock stuff. I think a nice TT kit on a stock or "stock" motor would run hard. I made 272 rwhp on a very simple and pretty cheap combo. Throw some boost via TT on there, and were talking easily to the limit of the stock block. Tune it well, hello 500 hp and a nice little street car!

I remember the artical I think it was MM&FF where they were in the 400's in horse and closer to 500 in torque at the wheels with a stock, or pretty much stock engine. If I can get better heads, cheap enough, hell yeah, but if E7's are all I can get cheap, they won't be the limit as much as the stock block. I have scene the results of so many poweradders, and it seems turbo is the way to go. Most "verterans" end up going turbo. Some are in classes of racing which limit turbos, because they are viewed as "unfair advantages".

I would love to build one myself, but the tuning scares me. Seems almost like you just have to try it and then see. It always means buying more parts and making them all work together.

Needless to say, in a few years I will be building a turbo setup of my own.....I need to keep researching the tuning aspect of it though!

if all goes right this winter I will be designing and building a junkyard set up on my friends HCI 306. The tuning I will leave to some friends of mine (one of the fastest turbo cars in the country, so it should be alright) but the fabrication and building of it should be something interesting!

dont go HP. the hellion kit (and the company) are held in the highest regard by the turbo community, especially as a whole kit. they just cant get enough of jon and his stuff. HP seems to have a few "skeletons" in the closet
