Sorry guys I am new to mustangs, Just bought this GT... Does it have a 4 speed Auto or just a 3 speed?, I do not see an overdrive..Is it a built in OD? The shifter only has 1,2,3 on it...Tranny is slipping bad when going into passing gear..Is there any common upgrads for this year model tranmission? The Motor is built decent and dyno's 285 RWHP so I need it to hold up to atleast that amout of power..Any help would be great ..Thanks

your tranny is a 4r70w. it can handle anything you can put to it properly modded. a valve body upgrade to a rebuilt one is all you need. they can be built to handle 9 secing cars. mine will handle 525hp and 475 lb-ft when it gets here. get a stall converter from dirtdoGG. he will make it for your car. he just needs a dyno slip.

I think '96 is still an AODE. I don't think the 4r70W went into the Mustang until 1999.

PATSGT, your trans is a 4-spd automatic. There is a button on the shifter on the left side UNDER the shift lock button that will disable the Overdrive. There will be a light in the dash that comes on when the OD is shut off.

If the tranny is slipping, check your fluid levels.

If your trans is gone, might want to consider swapping in a 4r70W from a 99-04. The gear ratios are better and the trans is better suited for performance.
