I think my clutch exploded…

I only agree with one part. If you have more then 12 months/12,000 miles on the clutch, it's your deal. It's just like brake pads and rotors. It's a wear item and even though the spring let go, it should still not be covered under warranty. If you're under that (12 months obviously not considering it's an 05, unless you bought it REALLY late), then you have the right to get a new one free, under warranty. If not, suck it up and buy a real clutch

If he keeps balking, get it towed to your dealership and work on them. If need be bring in a tranny expert and get them to provide a second opinion. Moreover make sure to lodge a formal complain with Ford about the service.

if you want to take a parting shot at the service manager, ask him if he's ever actually driven a performance car or if he drives automatic Kia Spectras.

Wrong.. The service mgr has a heck of a lot of say when it comes to warranty claims.. the reason for this is we the dealer are responsible for warranty claims we give the ok on, IF ford bounces the claim once they see that clutch the dealer pays for it them selfs.. Dealer owners do not like paying for your car repairs.

So when we get a car with mods we tell the service mgr who will then decline the repair and the regional rep will look the car over if he signs off on the repair we the dealer are not responsible for the costs of the repair if ford decides it's abuse..

this guy is just covering his ass and protecting his employer.. other words he is doing his job..

and from the sounds of this I think the regional rep is going to decline the repair and he is the final say.

One major thing going against you on this is that looks like damage caused by a 2-1 accidental downshift at WOT.. they blow apart like that

DID you miss any up shifts earlier in the day before this happened or anytime you owned this car.. The type of miss I mean is when your in 2nd or 4th and you drop it down a gear such as missing third and grabbing first on a powershift.

Gears multiply torque which is the purpose of gears. More torque goes to the clutch which could cause failure. The truth of the problem is the Voleo clutch. I am thinking that it has a defective in a certain assy run. I have seen a dozen people listing this problem I just have not put the effort on getting Vin numbers of the cars to see if they are close. Don't own one of the cars and with so many problems after 3 years I never will.

At what RPM was the engine turning at the time of the mishap?

We don't see 05+ mustangs in for service often, In fact I have only worked on two of them and we are a BIG dealer. mustang in general are very very reliable for what they are.. Even consumer reports rates the 99-04 GT's well in reliablity.

Only problems we have seen so far is the rear end noise around corners and that is common to al fords.. So I don't see where you get the idea that these cars are unrelaible.

I'm with SVTTech on this. There are lots of criticisms that can be made about Mustangs of recent years, but reliability is not one of them. In fact, considering how they hold up to the way some folks abuse them, I think it is safe to put them in the "Boulder" category when it comes to durability and reliability.

clutch going?

So.. my clutch hasn't exploded yet.. but..I posted a month or so ago about slippage, but now I'm not sure it is just the plates wearing. I bought this 2005 V6 about 2 mo ago with 8500 miles on it. I expereinced slippage once or twice but only in 4th gear and I acclerated. This was definitley intermittent.,.. and still is. I bought it at Carmax, and they told me to bring it in. We couldn't duplicate the problem. Now a few weeks later, it happened again last night, but in all gears. Except last night it started happening a bunch right after I went over some bumps in the road. Any time I accelrated hard, slippage. This morning its gone.. I now have almost 11K on it. After reading this thread, someone said up to 12K the clutch is under warranty????

Is it possible there is a spring or something that is not allowing full engagement intermittently??? I don't know enough about hydraulic clutches to know what would casue this...

anybody with ideas??? I don't want to bring it to the dealer to have them look at me strange when I can;t duplicate it on demand.

Oh the only mods I've done are: single GT takeoff muffler, drop-in KN air filter.

The BEST thing you can do is bring it into the dealer before 12K. If you bring it in for a problem (say clutch slipage) before then and they can't fix it... it is documented. I have had great experiance with this. If they know you have this problem, but they cannot replicate it at that time, they document it. So when it starts doing it all the time, they know it has happened before, within the warranty period, and usually is fixed.

I assume you're talking mechanics only? This board is awash with common issues on the 05+ Mustangs - the slow gas fill and skipping Shaker being prime examples.

Also, I've met people who get pissed about these issues, but don't do anything about them, so Service Depts see less action than they should. Crazy, I know, but I meet people all the time who seem to think the slow-fill issue is with the gas stations, and that the cd skip is a semi-normal issue (probably from experience of the good old days when cd players first went into cars and only didn't skip when the engine was off).

There's plenty wrong with these cars, and Ford knowingly propogated the issues found early on the 05MY onto the 06MY (haven't met anyone with an 07, so I can't speak to that).

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret for one minute buying my car, but then, I don't sit on issues I find with it. But saying this car is "well built" or relatively defect-free is simply at odds with the evidence.

Thanks for the advice. I brought it in to the dealer last Tuesday with 11.3K . I explained the sitch to the advisor. They called the next day to let me know they found the problem (sticking slave cylinder) and they were giving me a new clutch due to the slipping wear caused by the sticking slave.
far freakin' out.

while it was in, I also had them do 2 TSB's, fuel tank slow fill, and front seat cover coming off of front.

Anyway, clutch feels really different now....

I have been working on cars for a long time for many different makes and I can tell you right out that ALL cars from ALL manufactuers have some problems. The ones you listed there are MINOR.. I worked for Toyota for awile back 10 years ago and they had issues too. Anybody that swings wrenches on Fords will tell you that mustangs are pretty damm good, and if you take into account how bad many of them get pounded on compared to your average taurus they are DAMM good.

The day a car comes out that has no common issues I will be the first too buy it.
