If my car runs without a mass air meter should it be smoking?

So ive basically givin up on fixing my missing mass air signal on my car, i did and intake swap and larger injectors, got a DBX mass air meter "Ive tried 3 of them" no mass air signal. Thing is when ive tried everything i can think of. When I tried reving it up to see if i had signal at higher rpms like 3 grand it smokes like crazy, not sure of the color, smells like straight fuel, looks black sometimes greyish. Smokes on start up but i think its just loading up with fuel My only question is, would it be normal for my car to smoke when its basically running with no mass air meter? Im guessing yes

Yeah, it's gonna smoke with MAF unplugged on startup. The ECU relies on the MAF at all times, even when it's in open loop mode. No MAF signal, ECU has no idea how much air is entering the engine. It's gonna run extra rich and stall out even.

You gotta get that fixed. That isn't any good for it to run like that. And yyou putting bigger injectors can only make it run richer.... til the problem is solved. Have you checked the wiring on the salt/pepper harnesses? Not sure if the MAF feeds through that or not, gotta look again. Chances are the return signal is being cut off somewhere. Could be as much as a bad ground or something on the ECU itself. What have you checked so far?

Yeah ive checked out all the wiring, everything specs out. I just think im not calibrating the meter correctly, Im just gonna have it tuned at Anderson, they did it before, did a great job, and the Abaco DBX is there meter so, gonna suck to go out there but, DIRTFT...........Do It Right The First Time!!!! I just wanted to calm my fears of the smoking issue!!

Up till last week I have run my car with the mass air unpluged for about 2 years now. Runs 14.2 in the 1/4. Never smoked at all but I still had stock 19lb inj. Now I just went to a 75 mm mass air and 24lb inj. and yes it runs 10 times better (have not had it to the track yet to see how much). As far as smoking mine never did.

Mine does. I literally gag on the exhaust when it's running like this. If you're living in an area with high dewpoints and humidity or it's just constantly damp out, chances are it WILL be smokier if it's running excessively rich. If your plugs are getting real dirty or fouled up, then that can also cause poor ignition. The plugs will fire but it wont burn half the fuel it should and thus it smokes. If it's not white or bluish, then I wouldn't worry about coolant or oil issues.

I pulled the plugs and there covered in black. Not wet, they look like the inside of a tailpipe. So i guess its running pretty rich lol
