Ignition Module & Coil Pcikup Assembly

ok sooo my car is really bogging down.. like i cant do 40 MPH the RPMS just drop... so ive changed the Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Cap & Rotor, Spark Plugs, Spark Plug Wires, Coil, and ive Ran Injector Cleaner Threw it, And checked the Timiing... still no help... sooo i took it down to Ford and they told me "The Ignition signal is being lost so they have to change the (Ignition Module) and the (coil pickup assembly) because sing the signal is being lost its making my car bog down... and they want 650.00 for labor and parts and all that... im just wondering what you guys think? do you think i could do this stuff at home... cause i really dont wana pay to have something done that i can do myself... and if you have any input on this please help! i need to get to work lol!! thanks all!

It requires more ability to type than to swap a TFI.

The PIP is more involved, as the gear can fight you. A bearing splitter and jaw'd puller work well in concert (the splitter holds the gear, the puller removes the gear via the splitter). A common route is to get a reman'd dizzy at the parts store. Just be sure it has a new PIP on it (if the PIP on cores tests ok, the reman' companies often leave the old one there. That's a reason for the LLT warranty).

Anyhow, If you have a spare afternoon, we can help you where you get stuck and save you a TON of cash.

I will ask: Did the dealership say if this was a solution or a guess. It sounds like the latter. Generally TFI failure is heat and RPM dependant (not speed dependant). And PIP failures tend to be an on/off thing. The car will just shut off on you, or you'll go to start and it won't.

I'm not sold on it being a TFI or PIP issue myself. Let's see what the other smart gents think.

One more thing: If you have a code scanner (that can view PIDs), you could see if it can pick up the anomaly. Stream while it bogs and compare this to a non-bog stream.

And do you run cats?

Good luck.

Cats might be clogged. either due to age or its been running rich in which case its a symptom of another problem. The module is a breeze to change, the Stator or "pick up coil" is more of a pain as you have to remove and re-press the distributer gear, first removing the pin on the dizzy shaft. BUT there are a few tests to perform cause it may even be the coil. THEY want 650.00? How much labor/time are they asking-I think the module is the costliest part/+ the markup-shop around.

Had the stator (PIP) replaced last year on mine. Parts & labour CAD$260.94. About the same price as a reman IIRC. Problem was an on and off starting issue or the engine just dying. Given your complaint I'm inclined to think that it's something else.

$650 is highway robbary...do it yourself. it's really easy. spend the $650 to buy the new billet distributor and coil, module, all high performance accel or msd, mallory ot whatever. and you will still have money left over for dinner and beer.
distributor $300, module $100, coil $50, wires $50.

Just to let you know that bogging down might be related to module, or it's on it's way out, the accel sells really nice replacement for our car for $100.

Good luck :)
