Ignition setup? I'm kinda lost here.

Okay, I got this engine here.

I'm going to put on my old 2 barrel intake and carb from my old 302 that I had in my mustang. The reason for this is because I'm going on a road trip to Texas and a few other states down south.. were heading from Washington state so I'm thinkin the 2bbl will get a little better gas mileage. I'll probably put a 4bbl Road Demon later after the road trip.

My Question ... the ignition. I'm lost. I know points are finicky and old technology.. I'm not concerned at ALL with being stock, just price and performance.

I hear terms being thrown around like Fireball, Duraspark, and whatnot.. MSD is a safe brand unless I'm mistaken... So can you guys make some suggestions for an ignition system? What do you run? Any problems? Thanks!

I'm running a Ford Duraspark distributor, which does away with the points and is a readily available stock component on many later model cars, a MSD 6 AL, and an MSD Blaster 2 coil. I plan on converting to an MSD distributor somewhere down the road, but they are expensive. I've had the Duraspark distributor on the car for about 12 years with 0 problems, so I would recommend it if you're on a budget, but I do recommend running the MSD 6 AL as the multiple firing of the ignition seemed to smooth up the running of my engine. In my opinion, stay away from Mallory products, but others disputed this opinion on another thread, so perhaps I just got a lemon of a distributor from them.

The longer neck is to keep the coil from grounding thru the neg side of the coil. I have the blaster two, and have had no problems so far.
If you plan on getting the four barrel anyways, you may want to get it before the trip. As long as you keep your foot out of it, it will get better gas mileage.
