Ignition terminal

Ok, I finally found the terminal that you are supposed to splice into if you were to add a pertronix flame thrower coil, the picture is below. But my question is once you add the new wire, can you bypass the wire connector at the bottom of the steering shaft completely? or does the new wire have to run through it?

well, im gonna just go ahead and wire up the coil this morning. I can still run the new wire back through the connector at any time.
