I don't mean to intrude on NE Discussion turf, but I want some good, honest feedback.

I'm going to Boston next June on business and want to know what I should put on my list of things to see and activities to do.

Any suggestions?

Hopefully this reply will stimulate our greater Boston members to post their advice (which will likely be more knowledgeable than mine).

Sports: check out the Red Sox 2006 schedule; Fenway Park is a unique experience.
Pubs: Not my expertise. The place that served as the model for the "Cheers" TV series is easy to find, but more a tourist attaction than a real Pub.

Seafood: almost impossible to go wrong here. It would help if we knew the approximate street address of where you will be staying during your visit.

Nightlife: I'll leave this one to the locals. When I was 26, my Idea of nightlife was an area formerly known as the "Combat Zone" (Washington Street - mostly strip joints and bars).

History: Let's start with the Old North Church (of "one of by land, two if by sea" fame) and the Archives room at the Massachusetts State Capitol building. Both are readily accessible by Subway. In preparation, you should download a subway system map . . . . see:

The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is in a new ultramodern structure in South Boston. That means there is good and bad news.

The good news is that there are several fantastic seafood restaurants nearby. The bad news is that you are not in a location that is real convenient to other attractions. The nearest subway station is at South Station (a big train station), about 3/4 of a mile from the Convention Center along Summer Street (walk toward the tall buildings). If you don't mind a little walking, it's another ~1/2 mile from South Station to Boston Commons, the State Capitol, Bull & Finch Pub (of Cheers fame), Beacon Hill, and the Historical Walking Tour. Other than Beacon Hill, the trek is on flat ground, so easy walking.

My recommendation is to study the city maps, internet tourist guides, and subway maps, and then outline a plan in advance. Then we can comment as to whether varoius aspects of your plan are practical. You might want to check out the Boston Museum of Science web site to see if it interests you. It has it's own Subway stop, perhaps a 15 minute ride from South Station.

If your over by Fenway Park, then there is Lansdown street. with a ton of clubs...

No Name Restaurant (that's the name) for great seafood. It's not pretentious, show up however you are and have a wonderful seafood dinner. It's on one of the pier's and surrounded by some working dsitribution and warehousing facilities. Fannueil Hall has several good restaurants as well as comedy club and shops. Great place in the summer. Durkin Park is a good restaurant in Fannueil Hall. It's a great town, I was just relocated to SE PA from Boston.

My advice?
Stay away from "Cheers" (off the Common)
If you want to go there to say that you have been there, then....OK,...I guess.
Just don't expect the same service or friendliness as you see on TV!
Their PRIMARY business function is a Tourist Trap, their SECONDARY function is "Local" Pub!

IMO, there are other fine Pubs in Boston you can hang out with the locals and get more of Boston has to offer! In "Cheers", you get to talk with other tourists...hence the phrase "Tourist Trap".

IMO, the Irish pub called "The Burren", in Somerville, (A 'burb of Boston) is by far on of the best Pubs in the Boston area. Not touristy at all!

The Paul Revere house is kinda cool to visit.
The North End is also cool to visit, but becoming kinda touristy. (IMO)
The Duck Tour is cool during the Summer months, but I suggest getting tickets waaaaayyy before hand.
If you are into American history, then you have the Old North Church.
And if you want to venture further out, check out Lexington or Concord, MA!
Quincy Market? One giant Tourist Trap! (IMO) Good shops to look around, though, but most are now corporate driven. (Disney, The Gap, etc...)
New Engalnd Aquarium is very cool, but I hope you like standing endlessly in line waiting for tickets. (Same goes for the Imax Theater, next door.)

if u can afford the travel go down to fall river just 40 mins south of boston and see Battleship Cove, it has the U.S.S Massachusetts (WWII battleship of the North Dakota Class), U.S.S. Lionfish (WWII Submarine), 2 PT boats (the only ones left in the world), A destroyer, several aircraft and some other military stuff, VERY COOL if you like history and especially military history like myself, and you can also visit the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston harbor which is right next too the WWII destroyer Casin Young.

GOOD LUCK and get with some hoes while ur at it..haha

History, especially WW2 related, is a very strong interest of mine and I had no idea there was that much in the Boston area. That is great information which you have shared! Thank you so much! I appreciate the time you took to provide feedback.

Anywho, I re-enlisted onboard the Massachusetts back in 1990 (Navy).
It was great! I arrived there with just the Officer who was going to re-enlist me and the photographer. We were there before the ship was opened to the public. So, I re-enlisted, then I has the whole ship to myself for about an hour! It was fantastic!
You are right, it is VERY cool if you like American history of WW2.

And the people onboard know every question you can throw at them!
Yes, Battleship Cove is a MUST!
