i have a thread in the west coast forum, and a pm to stangchick from our forum who lives in california. we'll see what happens

the only mods i would do are better flowing aluminum heads and lower intake from edelbrock and a fairly mild cam. i would want this to stay essentially stock to keep the value high

The parts you are talking about buying are what Grady was talking about. Then you'd need headers to take advantage of the heads. Then a new carb. Then, you may as well rebuild the engine. (I won't mention the "may as well, while I'm at it" that will befall you when you get into engine parts. "Le Mans" rods cost how much, now!!!???) Then you'll want better brakes. May as well put some aftermarket wheels on it, too. Then maybe a shift kit for the trans. Some gears for the rear end. On and on.

Ask me how I know. I had a 1966 Fairlane. (I LOVE that body style!!!) It was a fun little 2v 289 auto car. I swapped up to a 351w (Windsor Sr's, Hooker Super Comp headers, Holley 750, Performer RPM intake, Mallory ignition stuff, etc. It WAS a BEAST!!!!) and Toploader 4-speed. Then a 9" with 3:55 gears. Then disc brakes from a Torino. On and on.

I sold the car for a loss, because I couldn't afford to go on adding stuff. The floor pans were starting to "show through" and the rear springs started sagging, etc.

That's a lot of money and it's coming from a college fund. I'm really not trying to talk you out of buying it. (Not my place. Just adding my opinion to this mix. I did the same thing when you were talking about the Poncho, a few months ago. Old cars typically cost at least DOUBLE what you expect to pay. It's just a fact.) It's just that once the car is in the driveway, the allure and romance start going away. Then all the little issues start becoming like the proverbial "small rock in your shoe". Sorry if I seem negative. I'm not. I've just been down this road, myself.

i hear ya reddy. a few years back, i bought a 1970 stang and was in the process of restoring it when i learned that all the little things add up. i ended upselling it at a loss.

if they are too expensive, then heads, cam and intake will remain stock. i am ok with keeping the modding to the stang. i can handle that

the good thing about this car is that it is mechanically sound, and only needs paint and upholstery to be considered "done". if i were intending for it to be my daily driver, then i would probably want to upgrade stuff to make it more safe or a better driver, but it is first and foremost a investment, and i won't do anything to jeopardize that. as many of you have reminded me, i need to keep in mind that it is college money.

Chris,

This is the part that concerns me. My fatehr has bought a couple of cars in this condition... One we brought to the junkyard once we learned how much work it needed and the other has already taked $12k of work and that was just floorboards and frame work (and a coule K of that is parts)...

I just would not cheap out on a $300-400 cost to see and drive the car yourself on a $20k investment (adds 2%)...

The fact that this is a college fund doesn't bother me. I didn't get much for college and I have the loans to prove it... I plan to do the same for my son...

Just think ahead and if it really does sound too good to be true (it kinda does) then it is worth a quick trip.

Seriously What ever you decide good luck. I know you have issues with the stang and would hate to see you have 2 cars that are giving you problems. I know that feeling way to well. Or buy it and get shafted meaning it being a piece of junk

no ... i have a life.

seriously tho ... the stupid thing is not on the road yet. i am at the mercy of the people doing the work. the tranny is pretty much done, but we are waiting on the mid-length headers (another week or 2) and shifter (early next week) to put it all back together.

then it should be back on the road.

i am considering having him put it back together with the B&M and kooks just to make sure the tranny is now good.

hehe, well I don't have a life. It has been wrapped up in this stupid car for too long too. After I get it to stop "pooping" belts out and I can drive it normally, I get my life back. I find myself posting a lot more too while in the process of building the car.

i found a shop nearby that specializes in vintage muscle cars. the owner is going to take a look at it tomorrow.

If I could have any of the vehicles on that truck, the fairlane would be the obvious choice.

So...need any help prepping it for paint?

thanks for the offer! but i am sending it to a guy who does it on the side. it'll probably cost me about 4-5 grand, but that is part of the plan ...
