I'm thinking of getting a motor bicycle

Anyone have any opinions on this years GSXR 750?

This is my first bike

A friend of mine bought a Hyabusa a year ago (his first bike ), but I am not that brave

Any opinions are welcome

Well, get the big bike, but just stay off the throttle. I think you can actually put a throttle stop on those, someone told me that once.

yeah, all the experienced riders I talk to say the 1000 may be a bit much for a noob.

At the same time though I don't want to get a scooter, and have to trade it in in 6mo.

750 feels right. (then again what do I know)

I learned on a 750 and it was a bit of a handful. The thing is that if you do something weird and yank the throttle, you can get into a world of hurt. But the 600s these days are so insane that you can walk one of those too (I've ridden newer 600's but dont own one. I've got two 750's and a literbike).

And all of 'em get real squirrely in the rain. I'd shoot for a cheaper small bike (used, non-mint 600, or what I normally recommend is an EX 500). WIth those, you learn, perhaps drop it, and then unload it for about what you paid or close (they get passed around as cheap learner bikes). And you're ready for your nice bike and know you probably wont set it down. It'd hurt to break $$$$$$$$ plastic on a nice new bike.

Hey man for a first bike you just want a beater for a few grand for you to learn on.

Trust me I been riding for 12+ year and now I own a Ducati 996s Foggy replica my 3rd bike. From all the years or experience I can tell you this.

There are only two kind or riders. The ones that been down and then ones that will go down.

Yeah I know its stupid but its true. Even a small slip on sand or what ever when you come to stop or you stall the bike when you start out can cost you thousands if you tip it over. So get a nice used bike like an older 600 that wont break the bank incase you dump it and learn how to ride first before your get a nice new GIXXER 750 or 1,000

Make sure you allways were your gear and Good luck

Dude have you ever ridden a crotch rocket? I rode a Gixxer 750 and honestly man i never got it much past half throttle. I would take the advise of some of the other expereinced guys and get a crappy beater bike first. YOU ARE GOING TO LAY IT DOWN! a couple times...guaranteed! After that i would still only move up to a 600 or maybe a 750 if you are really good with the beater. a 600 is still silly fast...especially a new one. Your talkin 100 hp on a bike that barely weight 400 lbs.

Don't listen to the blah blah thats to big bull ****, buy what you like. If you have and self control you wont have a problem, let your brain tell you when your ready to open the throtle. I haven't had a bike under 1000cc yet.

Alot of good advice...You can get a good 600 for around $3000 or less... A friend of mine at work, just bought a new GSXR 750. I took it for a ride and that bike is all you can handle plus more.... Im not what you would call an experienced rider,but Ive owned one before. Those 750s are baddd.... Just get a 600 and learn,then dump it for what you got in it...

AMEN!!! I picked up a 89 250 Ninja for $500, and that thing is gosh darn horrible. I have riden a '04 R6, '06 1000RR, and a 600RR. Just be cautious, easy on the throttle for a while. If you have any self controll what-so-ever, get the 750 or liter bike.

A LOT of people on this site will tell you get a smaller bike, or an older 600, and learn that way. Good advice, but if you have any controll, you can do the big bike.

Look at it this way you can kill yourself on a scooter if you want to be an idiot. Show some self control and you'll be fine with anything. Sign up for a motorcycle safety course, wear your gear and you'll be fine. I love my litre bike and totally glad I didn't settle for something smaller. Good luck man.

Im in the same boat you are. I wanted a bike forever. everybody i told said nothing else than 'youre going to kill yourself'..
so whatever, when i had the money. i bought one anyways.
i bought a 2002 Yamaha YZF600R. Not perfect condition. but very nice to look at. alot cheaper than anything brand new.
that way if i ever wreck it, i wont cry myself to sleep at night.

Oh, by the way. ive never been on a bike before buying this.
took me less than 5 minutes to get it down.. if you can work a cars clutch. you can learn to work a bikes.

now, after 3-4 days of casual riding im just getting the balls to open it up a good bit. id say i had it up to maybe 7-8K... when it redlines at 13K.. and the powerband really just starts at around 8 so im told.

So yeah. a good 600 is plenty of bike for you for now. you can always trade up later...

Beats learning on something with 1000+... and a slight slip of the throttle in 1st or 2nd and the front wheel gets air

That's a nice bike, I personally won't ever buy a 600 unless I find one for under a grand. 900 and up for me.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to post their thoughts.

I have been kicking it around a little more and here are some thoughts that are going through my mind.

1. I want something new. Part of the reason for getting a bike is that I can afford something that has not been messed with by the previous owner. I am getting tired of finding poor wiring in the 90GT. I want to hit the start button, and drive away, with no worries.

2. I don't want to learn how to ride a bike on something that has been passed around. All the quirks that a vehicle develops over the years will only make it tougher for me. For example I don't want to be concerned that the clutch may stick when I try to downshift into a turn.

3. I will not trade the bike in for many years. I tend to hang onto vehicles, even when they have outlived their practicality. For this reason I feel that I should buy something that I can grow into. This bike has to still be fun and challenging in 5 yrs.

4. I have never been in an accident, and have only had 1 ticket for speeding (about 7yrs ago). I have been driving the 408 in the 90 GT for a solid year now and have driven in snow and ice. I think all of these things demonstrate my self control and responsibility on the road. What really worries me is the first few weeks when I have to learn where the turn signals are, how to work the clutch, and how to brake with my hands.

5. I won't ever get on the bike without a helmet, and would most always have a jacket and gloves on. I fully understand that I don't have to be going fast to be seriously injured on one of these bikes. (Even if I purchase a 600 or smaller)

6. Yes, I will most likely drop the bike at some point. It will piss me off, no doubt about that.

I will be getting a 750 or larger, or I won't get a bike at all (atleast for the time being).
Purchasing a used bike does not interest me at all.
