I'm the original owner of a 96 Cobra with 75k miles. Over the past 6 years I've seen a gradual sluggishness worsening upon acceleration--essentially, the car doesn't want to move when I hit the pedal (and yes, I do consider the car's age). I had a compression check performed last year, everything was fine. I've tried other remedies but nothing has worked. Recently, I was told cleaning the IMRC could solve this problem. Is this true? I was also told flushing out the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation?) could improve power. How many of you had/have this problem, and do the above procedures work?

Thank you.

I have had the exact same problem on my cobra, the slugishness and lack of power. my cobra is a 98 with 80,000 on it. i went to superior automotive in anaheim, ca and got it checked out. the guy helping me out said that he had to tune and clean out the sensors, and install new plugs. i got a diablosport chip, he tuned it and everything else. the car runs great. i also changed my fuel and air filters. i also thought i had a problem with the IMRC, i took it to 2 diff. ford dealers all ready to ripp me off with over $1200 worth of parts and labor telling me that I had a IMRC problem. the check engine light was on, but...it wasn't the IMRC, it was my stupid aftermarket car alarm. the guy at superior checked it out and said the IMRC's were both fine and I even dynoed it! hope it helped out!

It isn't that big of a deal to clean them yourself. http://www.svtmustangcobraclub.com/media/pdfs/tech/IMRC_Cleaning.pdf

I read that the 98 IMRC units had bigger secondary openings then the 96. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one of those at a reasonable price? I have been putting off fixing mine and I figured if im going to take the time to open her up, I might as well upgrade.
