In Search of... Rack and Pinion Info

Like I said, I haven't measured the travel in years, but it is somewhere between 61/2 and 7 something inches which means finding a rack to do it right is going to be extremely difficult.

whats with the flaming river rack? Does their new "header friendly" design actually succeed and is it a decent kit or is the one from speed direct better?

Fatman Fabrication uses Escort racks. Anybody looked into j/y Escort parts?

The escort rack? Would that be a good one to use since the car is so much smaller than our stangs?

i don't see a lot of difference between the cavalier rack and the intrepid rack, they could be almost identical, although if i were to see the two of them side by side i'm sure i would find quite a few differences. i'm guessing it'll be mostly dimensional.

any body think a big cars rack would work, like a caddy or lincoln. their rack travel must be longer then a escort/ tempo.

Hey Hakan, the square section bits that the tie rods bolt to, are they welded into the bar, or did you start with some square section bar and machine it round??

well ready my jegs cat. I saw that they sell a after marked pinto rack system, it is
3 &3/4 turns for full travel. if someone could see how many turns there original steering has. we maybe able to get it to work.

Fred.....turns lock to lock don't mean squat.....it is the overall linear travel of the rack that is important and it needs to be around 7 inches IIRC, maybe a little more.

ok well just throwing ideas out there,, so if I wanted to find out the total travel for a rack I do this how,, jack the car up and measure what. wheel travel from ful left to full right? or do I need to be able to see the rack and measure there.

Nothing is welded, it´s made of a square bar that was machined.

I made a similar bar today for a ´65 Mustang convertible that I am putting a manual version of the r&p on. Will add pics at my website showing more of it later on.
