It was actually a lack of slack. Too tight. They sent me a complete new kit. Unfortunately I figured out what my engine noise was and it ended up being three rod bearings were shot. Time has been limited, but I'm just finishing up rebuilding the motor. I haven't installed the timing kit yet.

You asked earlier about Plasigage on torque-to-yield bolts. You can either substitute a pair of "regular" bolts while you measure, or go ahead and use a pair of the used TTY bolts, and just run them up to the first torque setting without the additional rotation.

Did you discover the reason for the timing chain slack? I'm having that issue as well.
I installed the new set yesterday and although it's still a little tight, it's a lot better. You can see where the chain is going to settle in to the gears slightly which will make it better.

Great idea. Thanks.

OMG. It just hurts to look at pictures of the coked on oil. I had no idea it could actually look that bad.
You have no idea... The uglyness was second to none. I ended up rebuilding the whole motor. Three rod bearings were smoked.
Here's some highlights of where I ended up:

I cut the electrode, broke out the porcelain and carefully drilled it one size at a time to collapse the threads. I didn't even touch threads in the head.

Dipstick tube to header clearance with an F150 tube. They're the exact same length as a Mustang, just bent differently.

Success! We lit the fires last night. Here's the vid of the first start up and after the first oil change. There's an exhaust leak at the x pipe on the drivers side because of a cut flange, but other than that it runs awesome. Thank God! We just have to weld the flange and throw the springs in it tomorrow and we'll be down the road finally.

Here's my son throwing the bolts in the lower a-arms. He's helped me quite a bit on this build. He really earned this.

We put about 100 shake down miles on her this weekend. I couldn't have asked for more. It runs and drives like a new car. The exhaust tone is perfect. Nice and loud lol All that's really left to do is to swap out the rear springs for the Roush set I have. They're ~ 1/2" taller than the ones that are in it.
