installing an AODE

got a friend of mine helping me install me freshened up aode this weekend. he knows what hes doing, but for my own knowledge, any advice? any thing special that has to be done? someone told me with the new TC, it has to be turned a few times or somethin?

Yeah, when you put the new converter in, you should turn it a few times and listen closely for a light ticking or clicking sound. You should turn it until you hear it three times.

Make sure you check out the rear main seal, because this is the time to replace it.

Don't forget to properly adjust the manual lever when you re-attach the cable.

Really all I can say is take your time, because there's a ton of little things that can screw you up in the end.

I'm sure he knows but make sure you put some fluid inside the TC before putting it onto the trans.......it's good you have help....doing one by yourself is not fun........don't ask how I know...lol.....did you already remove the old one and have it rebuilt? I take it you have already pulled the old one....

That's what I'm assuming as well.

Oh yeah, I would let the fluid soak in the converter over night. Especially if the converter is new.

the blown tranny and tc are still in the car. i have a newly rebuilt tranny and i will be purchasing a stock tc. just a stock aode rebuild and a stock new tc going in, nothin crazy.

the current tranny will hopefully be coming down tomorrow nite, so that i can drop the current tc and go purhcase the new one on saturday morning so i dont get charged that little core pricing.

i hope to have the car back on the road by Saturday afternoon/Sunday Morning depending on the weather.


now fellas, ur sayin turn the TC 3 times or so til u hear a click correct? my buddy hasnt done a aode in awhile, so lets cross our fingers. is there any steps that he could possibly do or not do to cause the tranny to blow again?

the clicking noise is pretty faint, so you gotta listen close.
Since you're taking everything apart, I suggest getting some sammich bags and separating the bolts from all the individual parts. and label them, of course.
make sure to drain the TC before you pull it out-- it has a drain plug.
Jack the car up as high as you can. You want as much room to work with as possible.
When you are ready to pull the tranny, you might want to put a plastic bag or something over the rear where the d/s slides in (cant think of the damn name) or else you will get a nice armpit full of fluid like Paul (i tihnk) did.

get a tranny jack,50$ at harbour freight i think.i pulled my aode out many times when i still had it,its a lot easier with the tranny jack.the aode is a heavy mofo.

Agreed.......and if I may lend a little advice.......what I have done the last 3 times........is once the hpipe and all is off and the trans jack is under the car.....I lower the trans very slowlywhile it is attached to the engine.....I let it drop a little so that the engine tilts.....then you can reach the top bolts of the tranny a lot easier.......you still have extensions......once the top 2 are out....I jack it back to the original position and then remove the bottom bolts...............when putting back in......do it in reverse....once the trans is proplerly flush....place the 2 lower bolts in.....then lower the tranny little and insert the top 2.......made it a lot easier for me.............

and cover the "TAIL"......as said above....

spray the hell out of the dowel pins with PB blast. Mine were a pain in the ass because they were rusty and did not want to slide out easily. In fact, one dowel pin stayed in the block, while the other went with the tranny bellhousing.

That would have been me. Now that I have an aluminum drive shaft, I just reinsert it and let it hang in the back. It comes down the transmission and much less mess. Before the aluminum drive shaft and AFTER the armpit of fluid. My buddy loaned me a yoke from a broken drive shaft. :nice: So if you twist a u-joint and/or bugger up a driveshaft... keep the end yoke for a plug. :nice:

Oh, and if you ever pull the engine... make for damn sure you put your tranny hard lines back in FIRST before installing the engine again. I had to cut mine into and reflair them to splice them in the car. :bang:

Will's measurements are also how it has worked out for me in the past. After you get it installed, jack the rearend up and run through the gears a few times.

Tranny jack is very helpful... I bought one and it has come in handy many times (work good for handling gas tanks also). Also makes a nice display pedestal to sit my old AODE on in the shop when the jack is not in use. :)

hey guys got a question for ya...

if im lookin at the tranny as if i were installin the TC, which way would i turn it or does it not matter? and what happens if u over turn it after u hear the click? can u back off if u over turn it?

i havent done either yet, just askin before i do so

i turned mine clockwise, you cant go to far, just keep spinning and making it move up and down and push toward the tail shaft, 2 clicks, you can hear it, i did mine for like 2 mins LOL (you would have to understand why)

when the trans is bolted up to the motor, grap a tq. conv. stud and move it back and forth, listen for a metalic clank, if you hear it, you are good to go, no slight movement or clack, take the tranny out and try again.

everything has been installed...

runnin a Dacco rebuilt TC, rebuilt AODe by a local tech school here, and a FRPP aluminum DS...

NOW...

my question is this. WHY does it sound like the tranny is whining alot when im driving it? it just seems very load to me. do they always do this? u think it could be because i have a quieter exhaust and i now hear everything? or is something too tight or not tight enuf? or is it because of the DS?
