Installing New engine C4 torque conv. question

my uncle has a 66 mustang fastback that he is getting ready to install the engine and transmission (c4) in and he had a question. He wanted to know if he needed to put transmission fluid into new torque converter before installing it onto the engine. If so how much would he need to pour into it?

nobody? he was hoping to get it in today but probably not going to happen now... he has a few books but none of them are specific on the issue

I would recommend 1/2 to one qt. for the initial firing, and then add more as required. You only need to avoid "dry" contact. If it's a new or rebuilt, the fluid pressure will get stuff moving right smartly.

I guess TCI says "fill it!"

I always put a quart in when I do it. Never do it dry thats for sure.

1 quart and check it after the fire up to add more.

thanks alot guys he started going ahead and puting the transmission on the engine without putting any oil in the converter. So thanks alot for giving us the heads up and lettign us know what to do!!

It needs oil. Also make damned sure the converter us seated all the way in before trying to bolt the engine and transmission together. And if they won't slip together easily, STOP!!!!!!! Do NOT try to force them together. You WILL end up breaking the front pump gear with the converter. This has happened to more people than you'll ever guess. I would also fill the conveter halfway full. That's the most you'll get into it and not spill when it's inserted into the transmission.
