instrument panel/vehicle speed sensor

I'm considering converting to an all phantom gauge cluster and my only question is the speedometer. I've got a stock 85 mph cluster and would like a 140-160 phantom speedometer. Will my MECHANICAL VSS adjust itself or do I have to go find an aftermarket or a newer VSS?

The VSS sensor is mounted on the transmission and is used to provide signal for the cruse control and on Mass Air cars, the computer. It uses the transmission speedometer drive, but does not affect the speedometer in any way.

Then I guess I'm refering to a speedometer cable? Whatever the thing is called that is attached to my instrument cluster...Can I use stock one? I guess the question I'm trying to ask is will I run into trouble using a 140 or 160 mph cluster on my 87 with a stock 85 mph?

A 140 MPH speedo and cluster will fit in your dash. Use a cluster from an 87-89 car and it is a one for one swap. The clusters from 90-93 have different wiring, but can be made to work.

See http://www.stangnet.com/tech/cluster87-93.pdf for information on the wiring differences, The clusters are interchangeable, but you have to do some trimming & move some wires.
You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://get.adobe.com/reader/

if youre looking at a mechanical gauge, theres an adapter autometer sells for the stock ford cable.

no idea which vss you would need with an electric gauge, but the stocker may be able to be modded (aka, splice it in), possibly one from a 99+ v6 would work too (stock electric speedo w/t5), but im guessing on all that. i have seen it done before though, just cant remember how they did it......
