Intakes- Typhoon Vs Explorer

Hello everyone, I have been happy with the set-up on my car(see sig) except with the intake. Now I know that whenever we mod our cars we are always going to make a trade off in the power band, low end torque vs top end HP, my car runs good,ie; stable idle,fuel pressure,etc. but it lost a lot of low end torque, and I attribute that to it having too much intake manifold as the Typhoon is a copy of the Edelbrock RPM, (A shoddy one as far as casting quality), I had plans of using this car on weekends and at the track once or twice a week, but due to a series of back injuries, funds have been low,and I had to sell my Taurus and the Stang has become our daily driver,I have been frustrated at keeping up with certain cars and traffic(sometimes) unless this car turns 3000 rpm on up, so I need some opinions as I have found an Explorer upper and lower on a straight up trade and thinking the longer and narrower runners will help me pick up some lost torque, I dont plan on hitting the rev limiter with the way the car is currently set up, just looking to match for my current needs- I would sure appreciate your opinions as I have to meet with the guy tomorrow -also will I have a problem with hood clearance with this manifold? Thanks.
 
an explorer/cobra/gt40 will work well with that small cam. I WOULD however get a tmoss ported lower.

hood clearance would be fine.

alot of what you are experiencing ios the heads and mostly the cam though
 
The guy Im supposed to swap with has a shop and claims to to have exp. with Stangs and he mentioned the same thing and even suggested 1:7 rockers on the intake 1:6s on the exhaust or the other way around I cant remember, anyway alot of the Stang magazines have done dyno comparisons on intakes and the FRPP intakes have all won out on low end torque untill they reach higher rpms,they mention runner length and size as determing the power band of the engine, I wonder if I could gain 20 ft. lbs. or so across the board ?
 
Since money is tight, use the Explorer stock for now and when/if you want to get it's 200cfm flow rate up to the 250cfm rate of the AFR heads, then port the Explorer lower - which won't hurt torque at all.

I'm thinking along the same lines as the Snooze Man.

Compare your sig & my sig and you'll see some of the same parts like intake, heads, stick trans and the like.

As for my cam, it was setup with a focus on low to mid range torque production.

Another thing to consider is that LT's will bring up your low end a good bit.

Just thought you might want to see that your choice of intake does not always have to produce a softer low end.

I just came from looking at the the intake and its still on the engine, on a stand complete out of a 96 as it turns out he has 2 SVOs in his shop one for parts and one he,s working on, loads of parts laying around,he offered to trade me the intake for doing all 4 brakes and cutting out the cat, Im all over it this weekend :banana: that way I can keep or sell the Typhoon. As far as the cam, its such a mild grind that I wouldnt think it would trade off too much low end? Do you guys think the addition of the explorer/gt-40 will give me a noticable low end boost?
 
I personally think that too much of a big deal is made on "low end this" or "high end that"

It's not like youre putting a Vic JR on a stock motor. How long does it take you car to get to 3000 rpm from a launch 2 seconds..???

Is it really that bad? Anyway...that is just for argument's sake. I would follow the advice given to you so far..sounds pretty solid.

if you still have your stock TB, put that on it will help on bottom end, I have that same intake on my car and had an issue with the Tb and put the stock one back on and the drivability was better around town and cruising but you sure noticed it when you wanted to play there was nothing there upstairs.

2 seconds?Dude I dont like to "launch"and scream away from every stoplight I come across, and thats my point, I damn near have to.For example,everyone would prefer a 350 hp engine over a 300 hp one but at what rpm is it making the 350 hp? If its making it at 7000 rpm,torque for the 350 hp engine would be 262ft.lbs. and if the 300 hp engine maxed out at 5000 rpm,it would make 315 ft.lbs. thats kind of what Im trying to do(for now). BTW, thanks to all for their input.

But if you are NOT pushing it, what's the point in the low end tq? My DD Escort has about 120 Tq, but when I ease into it, it's no different then easing into the stang. (well kinda not different), but you get the point...the tq doesnt matter if youre not using it.

Ok, let me try to explain further, when Im at a light and I ease off the clutch, the engine revs and it is , to me, anyways, not moving as it should, in relation to the rpms,I got to push it and quickly row thru the gears, I wish some of you were here to drive it and compare it to your rides :bang: I started thinking clutch slippage,cable maybe, but as rpms climb so does the speedo,(in 5th on the hiway) so since its a stock shortblock,I figured the intake doesnt match the power range of the engine, and the air is lazy till it picks up speed, on the hiway downshifting to 3rd it pulls like mad! Seriously thinking about taking it to a place like Idlewild in Clearwater and letting them drive it to get another opinion. FWIW, fuel pressure is at 40lbs vac. off, timing at 14 deg.,cam is straight up,TDC is right on,TPS at .998,idle 700-750, vacuum bouncing a little between 14-15 inches,but pretty high,temp gauge between O-R in NORMAL,its got me wipped :damnit: for now.Maybe I should drive your Escort for awhile,Id prob quit bitchin about it then :fuss: LOL : Again thanks for all the input and letting me rant.
