Interchangeability between old school TKO and TKO 600

I know the 600 has an optional 26 spline output shaft and the 500/600 has different gear ratios but what exactlly is the difference between the TKO and 500/600? I basically want to buy a junk TKO and build it up to 600 spec (with 26 spline..). I know hard parts for the 600 are probably fairly pricy but I don't have $1800 to spend on a new transmission.

Any help would be appreciated.
