do they exist? i've been looking around at aftermarket heads and plan to stick with iron because of the cost. i want to stick with new heads since used heads would need to be rebuilt anyway. problem is i can't find any iron heads! they are all aluminum and a bit on the pricey side for what i'm doing. i didn't see any on FRPP, Jegs or Summit. Where would i find a set (if they even exist)??

just looked around a little bit, and if i'm looking at the correct heads i'm in the $1500 per set neighborhood. does that sound about right? if that's the case, gonna have to pass. i need to save SOME money for the suspension :D

i really thought iron heads would be considerably cheaper. that's what i get for thinkin'. the stock heads are lookin' better all the time....can't beat the price :nice:

well what price do you want to spend? You can find a nice used set of iron gt40's or 40P's for 100-400, on ebay and other classifieds and a decent set of used aluminum heads go for 600+, usually performers or gt40x heads. You can also buy procomp aluminum heads for like 650 brand new assembled but they aren't the best thing out there and are hit and miss if they'll require any machining new out of the box. I'd try to stay clear of them. You can also buy a brand new pair of Edelbrock E-street aluminum heads for $929 which are great starter heads

i was actually hoping to get into a set of iron heads for around $600. i made the rookie assumption that if aluminum heads cost X than iron heads should be considerably cheaper. WRONG! i've seen ads for the heads you mentioned and the prices seem reasonable, but they will then need to be rebuilt and that will add a few hundred bucks on top of the purchase price. when you figure in the cost machining, it's probably not far off of a new set. my price range for a set of heads is turning out to be unrealistic the more reasearch i do. and that's fine. i'll just have to make do with the heads i have and work around them. no biggie.

as always, much appreciated for the input.

I think you're incorrectly assuming that every set of used heads out there is going to have to be milled or require a full valve job. Find a set in good shape that don't require machine work or that were only run for a short time and you should be fine and still be able to stay within your price range.

I'd say you have two options:

1. Suffer with the stock heads until you have enough money to buy a proper set of aluminum heads (not junk Chinese stuff).

2. Buy a set of GT40-Ps that are in good condition.

I don't see the use in buying an aftermarket set of iron heads unless you're in some sort of a racing class that requires iron heads. The cost/benefit difference between aluminum and iron is just too big to justify buying iron heads.

thanx for the all the help and links!!

i'm reading through thumpers website now. may have to give them a call next week and see what they say. if anyone knows of someone on here that has/had them i'd love to hear what they have to say about the company and the finishsed product.

while i would love to jump on a set of aluminum heads, i'm not willing to part with dough required for membership. those will have to wait for another time. i will start watching the classifieds here and corral and see if something comes up that i can't live without.

thanx a ton for the help guys :nice: :hail2:
