Is getting water under the hood from a scoop a bad thing?

Hello again. I have a quick question. I installed a hood scoop from a 1982 Mustang GT on my hood. I love the way it looks, but I want to put two holes in the hood, under the scoop, near the rear for two reasons. 1) the scoop creates drag (which makes my hood wiggle) and the holes will give the air somewhere to go, and 2)I want the air brought in to help keep everything a little cooler under there.
My question is: If it were to rain or snow, and I got water under my hood, could it be bad? I've seen guys running the Mach 1 hoods or the stormin norman hoods with open vents, but I've never heard of a water issue, and the stock hood hardly seals tight. I'd put in some grating to keep foreign obkects out, but water will get in. If anyone can shed a little light on this, I'd be greatful. Thanks guys.

I ran the Storman Norman hood on an everyday car for about 2 years, water got all over the motor every time it rained, I definately didn't like it, but I never got any problems out of it. If you're putting holes under the scoop, you most likely won't have all that much water going into the engine bay.

Take a look at the pics in my link. It's a big scoop with an open face, and if I put two holes (at least 2" wide) near the back, I'm pretty sure alot of water will get through. But if you had no problems, that's a good thing.

I don't think you'd get that much water in if you put them towards the back. Honestly though, I wouldn't cut them, you won't really see a gain from it trust me and all your doing is giving yourself something to worry about. If you do cut them though I still think you'd be alright.

I have a cobra r w/svo scoop and I drive in the rain with no problems. It is a bit harder to keep polished parts clean, but its not that bad. Go for it!

Thanks. I am not looking for a gain per say, but rather to cut down the drag the scoop provides. Not much under my hood is polished, save the CAI, so I'm not worried about it.

a friend of mine had a small problem with his cobraRsvo hood dripping water right onto the cap, causeing his car to stall and just not start till it was removed and dried out. if you think this will be a problem, but the stock leather or rubber distributor cover back on

Glat you mentioined the rubber boot. Ive always kept mine on the dizzy. I like the way it looks.

My scoop is already cut out. I am going to put holes under the scoop in the hood so that the air sucked into the scoop will go into the engine bay and not be trapped. The holes will be back near the fire wall, not near the distributor.

Isn't that scoop meant to be installed the other way around, like mine?

Nope. it is supposed to face forward like an older Boss stang. Take a look at an 82 GT. the 83's reversed it.

the 82 scoops were originally made with that front face closed off, but the hoo dunder it was cut for some reason..someone probably cut the scoop to make it functional, watch for water in the air cleaner if you're carb'd. also check junkyards for those scoops, they're everywhere around here, definately not a rarity, a rear open facing scoop woul dbe best so the rain doesnt get pushed in the gap with the wind..but hey whatever floats your boat

The hood scoop is in the wrong place to draw much air in. The air flow goes right over the middle of the hood and creates a high pressure area where the cowl is. The 69-70 ram air for example didn't get much ram air effect. It was really a glorified cold air intake. If the holes in the rear worked you will most likely create more pressure in your engine compartment decreasing your cooling ability to draw air through your radiator.

yea as long as the water is not getting sucked into the air filter or splashing on the distributor your good to go

On my previous carb'd Mustang with the 82 Scoop, I never had a problem and you could see the air filter from the scoop, I did however make a lip with the sheet metal. On an EFI engine the scoop serves no purpose, unless you face it so the opening faces the rear of the car to help eject hot air from the engine bay.

I don;'t like open scoops that dump water onto the engine.

Over in the 4.6L boards, it's a popular mod to modify the 01+ hood scoop to be functional by drilling out the honeycomb and cutting the hood. The problem with this is water now gets dumped down on top of the engine.

Just a month or so ago, a guy on the boards did this and then posted up that he was having problems with his car

the cause??

Water sitting on his engine basically corroded his coil packs and related wiring. He had to replace many of them and clean up all the rusty water.

I know the 5.0 doesn't have as much electronics on top of the engine as the 4.6L does, but i still wouldn't want to dump water and dirt down on top of it.
