Is it safe to shift a stock GT @ high rpms?

I shift mine at 5800RPMs. I have heard of guys running the GTs to 6200-6800 in autoscross events (not stock LOL, but I belive the bottomend was). They would loose a quart of oil every 30mins. Supposedly thats what leads to spun rod bearings...the oil lv will drop to 3-4 quarts and then there is shortage and the bearing spins. If your shifting abouve 6K, I would check the oil regularly....seems to be a ton of blowby with the GTs. DOHCs may be designed differently, but i have heard of the oil misteriously getting low in them.

I shift at 2500-3000 in regular traffic, but when it lets loose, 6000rpm every gear.

It was a big adjustment from the pushrod engines I have been driving all along. I drove my car and missed a shift when I had the stock shifter in when I first bought it and bounced off the rev limiter and thought I was screwed. 6K on my 1995 Cobra would have probably sent some shards into the oil pan.
Still love that low-end torque that car had.....oops getting nostalgic in the wrong forum

Nope....just fragile "glass-like" pistons and spindly "tooth pick" rods.

well a mach still has hypertectutic pistons and rods but the 5spds have forged cranks so unless you get a 03/04 cobra you will still have $hit for rods and pistons

Hell, I rarely see it with 3:73's

Around town I usually run up to about 3k but not at WOT. On the track it doesn't get below about 4200, and only that low because that's where I launch .

Was this person used to driving diesels?

I shift around 2500-3400 for normal driving. And when getting onto the freeway I shift at around 5000-5800. My car is only limited in rpm by valve float, fuel starvation and lack of spark at around 6700rpm.

I have 29k miles on my car and hit 5,500rpms daily. damn shift light.

Change the motor oil often....if your shifting 5k+ allot you may want to change your motor oil every 2 months or so.

disel trucks? Im not sure but semi trucks and 18 wheelers and ups big trucks.

Anyways i got her up to about 5k in second and the engine souded like shotguns , im not sure about the exhaust but it waas loud (im all stock with exhaust also). However, i think getting her up beyond 4k rpms lead to my intake failing and cracking sooner i knew just by revving under the hood from the throttle cord and seeing water/coolant squirt @ high rpms i was going ot have problems. Hehe, well after acouple days of getting her up high my intake got worse and worse. However, when shes fixed she will see more RPM's than 2000k-3000k :nono

I shift just under 2 thousand up to 25 hundred RPMs, regular driving. It saves gas.

When I want to GO, I shift at 5500-5700.

i shift between 2000-2800 regular driving.. but at the track i usually shift at 5700-5800 (unless i wait a hair too long)

High RPM's should be considered where you see the redline begin on your tachometer. In my opinion, if Ford starts it at 6000 rpm or so, then that's the go ahead to rev it that high. Now granted, you're not supercharged or anything, but if you ask around, the majority of people who've blown their modular engine did it because they missed a shift and hit the rev limiter under wide open throttle, were doing a burnout and bounced off the rev limiter, etc.

One other thing not mentioned is the affect shifting at higher RPM's can have on your transmission. If you have a 5 speed, some day just for kicks, speed up at normal throttle in 1st until your tachometer hits 5,000 RPM, then just push the clutch in and try shifting in to second at normal shifting speed. If your tranny is anything like the rest of us, it'll snap out of 1st.. same in 2nd going to 3rd at high RPM's, etc.
