Ok I fired up my newly rebuild 306 (95 Cobra) for the 1st time. I was able to get it to idle to set timing (14*) and take for several short rides but the idle is not consistent. By the way, she pulled strong with no hesitations. I've read and been told that with the 94/95 computers it's a hit or miss with modifications. Also, it seems to be running rich or lean (not sure need help determining). And the water temperature seems a bit high for me (210*). However, according to the Mustang Service Manual the fan cuts on at 221* (why so high) so that seems to be the normal temperature for these cars (don't like it). Note: The head gaskets were installed properly and there is no air pocket in the cooling system. Below are the specs.

1. Stock crank
2. Probe forged pistons
3. Eagle forged rods
4. Lunati cam: intake 218*(.500), exhaust 226*(.510)
5. Crane gold 1.6rrs
6. Crane lifters
7. AFR 165s milled for 10:1 CR
8. Edelbrock RPM intake (upper/lower)
9. Fluidyne Radiator (180* TS)
10 MAC CAI
11. Granatelli 75mm MAF
12. BBK 70mm TB

Here are the questions.

1. What do I need to do to get the idle right (consistent)?
2. What do I need to do to get the water temperature down to around 180* or so?
3. If a chip is needed, which chip is best for 95s. Is it best to phone order and install or have dyno tuned and installed.
4. How do I know if its running lean or rich and how to correct the situation?
5. Any other suggestions are welcomed as I've been out the game for awhile.

Heeeeeeelllp. Thx

I have a 94 and it has always run warm in the summer, but here in AZ the temps 100-120 every day and I have a supercharger. I have tried Fluidyne Radiator, water and water weter only, High speed fan on all the time, 170 thermostat then a 180, new air dam under car, oil cooler,7 qt pan 8 with oil cooler now trying Mark VIII fan see if that works, if not I will try elect water pump. I would just like it to run a constant 190 all the time, I hope that is not too much to ask ( still running 200-220 in stop and go traffic).
As for the rest of your questions a good tunner can get your car to run great, so get a custom Dyno chip. Don't believe everyone telling you can't get a 94-95 computer to run good there are many around here runing great with a good custom chip( 700 + HP). there will be a point if you run high HP that you may have to get a after market computer.

Whew. I feel a little relieved that someone else's car runs around the same temperature as mine. Thought it was just me. If need be I will purchase a chip to correct the problem and help in other areas.

Dyno tune can fix all your problem. They can get it to idle perfect, set your fan to tun on at a lower temp to cool it off faster, fix your fuel problem.

do you have stock injectors and mass air meter?

the difference in engine size and the cam are probably responsible for the erratic idle. you could probably use a custom tune. a reputable tuner will create a chip specifically for your setup, so no one chip is really better than another. a better question would be, "who is the best tuner?" i have a tweecer and do my own tuning ... to me it is worth it, but there is a learning curve.

Yes, it has the stock 24lbs injectors but 75mm MAF calibrated for 24lb injectors.

So are you saying that I can call a company that do computer chips - give them my specs and they can create a chip specifically for my car - mail to me and I just install with no problems. Or are you saying that I should go to a dyno and have them do the chip on the spot while dynoing the car. I would probably like to order the chip and install in the car but I am keeping an open mind. Thx. Peace

You can get a mail order chip, but its hit or miss. I think everyone here will agree to go to the dyno.

And I would say get a dyno tune.

Ok I was thinking like you guys to get a dyno tune chip. As mentioned earlier, I just fired the car up and only have 40 miles on the clock. How long should I wait before I get the dyno tuned chip. Don't the dyno's rev the cars to the limit. I am concerned about damage to the motor - should I be concerned. Thx. Peace

2000-3000 miles should do it, maybe not that long.

I would wait at least 1000 miles before letting them really lean on it hard...

The fans control your temp.1st do a180 stat. Either change the temp that the fans come on in the ECU or put in a manual fan switch. I chose a combo of both. I dropped the fan temps 10 deg each and installed a manual fan switch. I need to be able to pass emissions and it is much easier if the car is hot.. If i need to cool it down I just flip on a switch.

Your combo is simial to my old one NA one. Timing is what mine was at..14.
It took a while to learn. I also fiddled with the TB Idle air control and and blade position. I adjusted the FP slightly on the dyno.

Got the car idling perfect with no ECU tunning. If you do a chip do a custom on the Dyno.

based on this statement i would assume your car is a cobra if it has stock 24# injectors, in that case, if you have a 24# meter on it, it isn't gonna run right cause the calibration is in the conputers not the mass air, therefore you would need a mass air for 19's....

You are not alone in the temp problem. I went through all kinds of hell trying to figure out what was wrong...eg new radiator, hoses, fan, water pump...the works. I even tried a manual fan switch but the computer in our cars really mess with the way the car runs. I would suggest (along with many others who have posted) to get either a custom dynotune with chip...which can be expensive, or a computer modification. The tuned chip is great but if you plan to do any other modifications you'll have to have it redone...this can get costly. I used an A9L computer adapter harness and comp and it not only made my car quicker and idle better, it totally solved my temperature problems. Afterwards, with the a/c condensor out of the way and no fan on the freeway in 80 degree weather, I didnt even have to use the fan. I actually had to put in a warmer thermostat because it was running too cool. When I put this adapter in I also used a manual fan switch, but if I were to do it again, i would put it on a thermal switch. (My dad forgot to turn the fan on at the track one time and it spewed water wetter and water all over in the pits!) Just my $0.02

try bumping the idle with the screw until it doesn't surge .worked on mine til i got my chip they can turn the fans on sooner with the chip made a nice difference on temps too .
