Hello, this is the first time I have posted on this, or any other sight. I come on here all the time to read and search for data. I couldn't find the answer that I need for this one. I am mechanically inclined. I converted my '93 5.0 from auto to 5 speed.
The problem is that I decided to do the J-mod to my wife's '04 GT Vert, completely stock. I did the J-mod according to these instructions, http://www.crownvic.net/tech/4R70Wnotes.pdf. I normally wouldn't touch an auto but after reading about it, it didn't seem that difficult, and it wasn't except now 3rd gear is slipping. I drilled the holes in the separator plate exactly where it says to. I marked each hole with a marker and double checked it twice before drilling and then again after. I removed the spring in the hole behind the c-clip at the front of the tranny on the drivers side. I believe this is the 1-2 accumulator. There was also a plate and spring the fell out from above the valve body from the front passenger side. I believe this was the 2-3 accumulator. I put the plate back in with the pointed side down and left the spring out. I put on new separator plate gaskets and a new filter with 9 qts of fluid. I checked the fluid after it warmed up and it was good. At the same time I also installed a 70264 tranny cooler. I ran it in series with the radiator. I did this Saturday during the day. I drove it around a little after and it seemed fine. I saw on here that under normal driving the shifts would be softer. The shifts felt kinda hard under normal driving. I really like what it did under WOT. I also drove it around a little Sunday night. No problems. My wife drove it today and when she got home she said it didn't seem right. I took it for a drive and it was fine at first but then it just kinda slipped in 3rd and went to OD. I turned off OD and took off lightly again and it just wants to slip in 3rd. Almost like I'm holding the clutch in slightly on my car. I let the car cool down incase for some reason it was hot and drove it down the street again and it went into 3rd at first but the next time it just slipped again.
From what I said, does anyone have any suggestions on what I could have done wrong, or any other ideas?

Yup, the 2-3 retaining plate has 3 tabs that need to be CAREFULLY bent so that there is enough friction to hold it in place (but they are not bent too straight so that the bore becomes scored as the retaining plate is slipped into the bore). The friction fit will keep it from rotating up and interfering with the piston movement. I bet you have solved the problem now by adjusting that retaining plate.
