Jerky Ride?

My car rides like absolute garbage right now, it really started after I put the rims on, I'm not sure if its the rims or the tires I have that are causing it. The ride is just really harsh and my car tends to jerk around, for example I will just be driving in a straight line then it will just try and jerk me to the right/left all of a sudden, this happens more often when I am changing lanes, it tends to do it quite a bit then. Anybody know what could be causing this problem, like I said it started happening after I got my rims on. The tires are not in the greatest condition but I would guess have about 30% tread life left. They are Kumho Ecsta MX. Also thinking about trading my solid axle and suspension stuff for an IRS will that make the ride better?

How big are the rims? Larger rims will hurt ride quality. Did you get an alignment after getting rims? New tires may help a little.

The rims are 18x9 all around. I got an alignment about a month before I got the rims but not after. BTW who is Dr Johnson I know that quote is in that Avenged Sevenfold song Bat County.

I would try getting an alignment from a good shop, first.

I don't know if I would go that far, but he was a damn good writer and cooler than ****. Every sentence in that book is pure poetry.

are the rims/tires balanced? does this happen only at certain speeds? are you sure all the lug nuts are tight? have you shecked for any broken suspension parts?

The rims/tires should be balanced, took it down to Big-O tires and had them mount them and balance them. I havent really noticed wether it happens at certain speeds or not, like I said only real pattern I have seen to it is when I am changing lanes it seems to happen more often. I will check the lug nuts but I would imagine they are all tight. I will also check suspension parts I dont think anything is broken there either though. Any certain parts I shoud check I mean my LCA, UCA, springs, and shocks and struts are all pretty new.

Hmmm... I would check alignment and the balancing on the tires first. Also check your suspension for anything unusual like bad ball joints, bushings, etc..
I kinda had the same thing happened but it was my tires wasnt balanced right and they were wider causing me to follow grooves on the road.

i agree, when i had 275's on the front my tires would go in and out of the ruts in the road(caused by heavy trucks) and would jerk hard either way and when i was changing lanes it could be rough. I went a little smaller in the front and this helped slightly with the tracking. I do try to drive to the right/left of the ruts now. And stay in the left lane(no trucks alloweed)This is only on highways though. Didn't encounter too many ruts on local roads so no problems.

Are the tires a match for the rims?
If the tires are oversized, they'll look like they're balloning bead and the lip of the rim.

If that's the case, you could be getting tire roll also.

Mustangs WILL NOT TRAMLINE if they have proper tires in good condition and a spec aligment.

However, if they do not have all these things they tramline to the point where the wheel can almost be whipped out of your hands

on the roads around here, they're so dug out from traffic and **** that it's nearly impossible to not "track" in them.. they're in every lane down some of the main roads.. even when the tires were brand new, balanced and freshly aligned, they did it.. not callin on you Kilgore, just sayin that Arkansas roads suck

I am! the ruts are worn into the road and your tires will naturally follow this groove. Wider tires don't stay in the groove as easy and will jump out and jerk the wheel. I try to stay out of the groove all together and drive on the far side of the lane rather then the middle. My 285's don't like the ruts at all.

I have 18x9 rims all around. The front are 245/40/18 and the back are 275/35/18. I cant imagine the tire would not be the right size for the rim, and 245's really should not cause to much tracking, so I thought at least

In Pa we don't have 'tracking' problems, the whole width of the road is torn apart

dont you think the car would be undrivable, say, if a lower control arm was broken/missing??
