Just bought a 98 Stang GT 5spd

I thought you might be intrested in this instead of buying a cai. Its a homemade densecharger. alot of people here thought that densechargers were the"best" cai's, and fastredponycar sent me this. Ive been in the process of making it.

http://www.geocities.com/fastredpon...enscharger.html

In the article, it links off to mustangworld.com showing how to route it to the fender from the MAF. I think their link is broken. If you browse their how-to index, it's towards teh bottom of the page.

I'll go ahead and warn you thouhg. If you've got the stock MAF, you won't notice any difference Slap a C&L 80mm maf on there (if your car is pre 99) and THEN you'll have a grin on your face.

Those maf's are dirt cheap these days. I got mine for $95 shipped from a guy at stangnet's parts trader.

good luck if you try it. the other guys ar right though, T/a's and pullies will show you more performance.

NEVER! Did mine at 105k. Runs stronger than ever. Got to take a look at the bottom end while i was at it and everything looked great. Consider it a brand new motor after that. Just need to get some new internals now and it essentially will be.

no prob :) I bought a CAI off ebay, and will most definetly get a bigger MAF in the future. I want something to do to my car. I love tinkering with cars. =) The air filter on the throttle body is what alot of the chevy guys do. The engine uses a MAP sensor. So it doesn't have an MAF or VAF or anything like that.

The CAI's on E-Bay are a waste....unless it is one from BBK or Mac. You want something that looks good but you will arguably lose some HP. For the money you spent I could have sent you my Mac CAI.

So will that shifter not work? Or the handle or whatever you called it? What would be the best set up for intake then? I dont really wanna spend a ton of money on it.

The shifter handle is for the Tri-ax. A shifter from Steeda (Tri-ax) or Pro 5.0 usually runs about 180 dollars. It is not like the short-throw handle for the Probe which is where I think your misconception came from. This list will get you started in the general direction you want. Anyone disagree?

1. Gears...if they havent' been swapped already but we've discussed that. (450-600)
2. Headswap...PI heads from a 99 or better GT. (Price varies from 300-500 for used heads and do it yourself to 2500 for new and install)
3. Steeda Tri-ax or Pro 5.0 short-throw shifter (180-200 new easy do-it-yourself )
4. O/R H or X pipe ($130 new but lots of used ones..I got a Mac H for 75 used) or go for a hiflo catted but more expensive, another easy driveway job.
5. Cat-back(Price and quality greatly varies so you need to decide your likes)
6. Aluminum drive-shaft (150 new...do-it-yourself)

After these there are limitless engine upgrades such as cams turbos and superchagers but all too much for me.

I disagree about the ebay intake thing. I got mine of ebay and noticed an improvement. I, however, agree with everything else he said except the reccomendation of heads. Instead of 99+ i would advise going with 01+. It's just easier and you don't have to buy new valve covers. If you get the heads used you can usually get them installed with a p/p job for about 2k. However, if your going to do that, you should do some "might as well" things while your in there... For example...

cams (you have to do alot of research here on your particular application)
3-5 angle valve job
p/p
any other internals while you have the motor apart

just imho

Andy, like it was stated above, the shifter you showed was just the shift handle and not the whole shifter itself. It will only place the shift knob closer to you and will not have any affect on the performance of the shifts or the shift feeling. Here is a link to the actual shifter that would fit your car. http://www.mustangtuning.com/sttrsht5802v.html This would make the car MUCH more enjoyable. Trust me and everybody else who has one. They will tell you it is one of the best mods they have ever done. Hope this helps. PM me if you have any other questions. :nice:

Pete

THanks for all your help! In the probe, I experimented with two different short shifters. 3 I guess... if you include stock.

One was the pacesetter one that they actually make the car
and the other was an APC one that was meant for a honda. I liked the one made for the honda much better. My question is... does the shifter for the mustang make the shifts much stiffer and harder to do? If thats the case I dont know if im gonna get one.

Do you know where I can get a new speedo gear to fix my speedo? I drove by one of those boards that cops put up to tell you how fast you're going. My speedo showed 40 and the sign showed 31. So its about 10MPH off. Also.... where can I get a nice set of floor mats? Stock ones preferably

Don't put too much trust into what those radar signs tell you about your speed. They are very inaccurate, and unless there are no other cars within a quarter mile, you never know which one is being clocked. The best way to check your speedometer is to set the cruise at 60 and time yourself for 5 mile markers on the freeway. If your speedometer is accurate it will take exactly 5 minutes... :nice:

chances are you have 3.73's or 4.10's ...you will need to change out your speedo gear..its super cheap and easy to do...i got mine for $7. i think the one i took out was red (21 tooth) and the one i put in was white (23 tooth) Either way, the white gear is the one you need for 3.73 or 4.10...i would try this first befor spending $110 on a speed cal

I found some floor mats on ebay...about 60 dollars. Search for Mustang floor mats. In another reply about the CAI I wasn't saying that all of them are junk. I bought a Mac one from a guy for $85. I just would go for those that the seller has about 100 of and is of very poor quality. I bought my floor mats, CAI, and my Steeda Tri-ax off Ebay.

As far as the shifters, the Tri-ax is pretty stiff until you get some use. I'm not sure about the Pro 5.0 but I have been tempted to get one just to compare.

A friend of mine was selling his B&M Ripper shifter a while ago. He put it in my car to see if I'd like it. I never took it out, would never go back to a sloppy stock shifter.
Sounds like you've got 4.10's. How easy can you light em up? I've got a speedo gear and I'm still about 10 mph high??? But I can live with it.
Get the shifter, you wont regret it. If you know anyone w/ one, try theirs out first.

I use 10w30 in my stang for the engine...

I don't think the tranny takes oil, hehe. If it does then mine's in trouble. I've never heard of any 5spd taking oil.

The rear end uses grease, not oil. Dunno what kind.

As said above. Look into the 99+ pi swap. there is a difference, though, between the 99 and 01+ heads. The swap makes the car 100% different. Not only bigger valves and better ports but also an added point in compression. If you did this, too, you would have to replace the intake manifold and that would get rid of the coolant leak. Your looking at about 2g's price tag for the swap. You can find good deals in strange places, though. I got my heads/cams/valves for 350 off a wreaked 01.
you should change your tranny fluid (ATF) every 30,000 miles

Sorry don't have time to read all the reply's but if you want to calculate your gear ratio you'll have to pull the cover. Count the number of teeth on the ring gear, the pinion gear and divide the number from your pinion into your ringgear and that will be your ratio. Hope this helps.

My car lights em pretty good. I'll get some pics for everyone whenever I get my windows retinted. I like the car pretty good, except for the intake manifold. The intake manifold is a bitch. It pisses me off. Its a plastic piece of ****. That cracks and sends coolant all over your engine. Pisses me off like nothin else. I wanna buy an updated intake manifold from someone. Tomorrow im gonna change my tranny fluid if I get around to it. I bought 4 quarts of redline high temp fully synthetic ATF. cost me 30 bucks for only 4 quarts. I've heard good things about it though, I've always wanted to try it. Hope it works out pretty good.
