just got my car dyno'ed!

well, i learned a few things and have the opportunity to save my engine.

1. i normally run 87 octane, per the owners manual.
2. i now run 93/94 per dyno results.

first run 87 octane: started detonating around 4500 rpm, the guy shut it down. asked me what gas i was running, i told him. he recommended i jump to a premium. lickily i only had about 3 gallons in the tank so i went down to the exxon down the street and filled up with 93. on the way back i was sloshing the tank around trying to get it mixed as good as possible.

Run 1(shut down at 5200 due to detonation) 238hp/266tq

second run the 93 was still mixing with the 87, ran to 6000 rpm
239hp/281tq

third/final run 93 more mixed in
243hp/286tq

so, i think ill pay the extra 20 cents per gallon to save my engine, get ~5 hp, and ~20 lb.-ft.

i have to say, i was expecting to walk away with a dyno sheet saying no more than 225hp at the wheel

i was a smiles when i saw that dyno

btw, my car is stock except for Royal Pruple oil and welded in flows(NOT a full cat-back) but i doubt either of those had much of an affect on my #'s

thoughts?

 can you post the graph?
are those results SAE or STD? or uncorrected?

243 is high for a stock GT, are you sure it doesn't have a chip or something? Shouldn't be any pinging stock

Not trying to be an ass, just doesn't make sense :p

Not really, when I dyno'd my 2001 GT for the first time, it detonated really bad. The car was fairly new and had about 8,000 miles on it. Form then on, I ran premium or mid grade. (Now I have a timing adjuster so I have to run premium)

Back in 2001-2002, there was a huge depate on which gas to run. Allot of 2001 + Cars detonate on 87 octane, probably due to the slightly increased compression in 2001 and up cars.

Nice numbers!!

That sounds like a Wednesday car and everyone got a raise the day before. :)

I'm going to the dyno tomorrow and all I have is a drop in K&N filter a catted xpipe and magnapaks...i dont think the gears will make a difference.

Well I do know that royal purple in the engine, tranny, and rearend netted a LS1 Z28 9RWHP. So that could help (have it in the GTs rearend). Flows give about 1hp, and if there is a K&N that gives 1 hp. So that would be 11 over stock. MAX stock is around 230, so that would be 241. You either have A GREAT RUNNING ENGINE or B. it was very cold out with perfect conditions, C. the #s are STD, or D. there is a performance tune installed/ dealer or factory flashed the stang with more timing than normal. EDIT: ^ the gears will actually hurt your #s on a dyno for whatever reason, I guess more friction.

you don't fill up to the max, in fact its bad for the motor to put in too much, Flowmaster says 15hp gains, so it could be 2-5 over stock, K&N could also give 2-10 hp over stock, I would give it more than 1hp, you can feel a difference when you install flows and K&N, but you won't feel 1hp, I believe the detonation also, my stang runs like crap on 87

after looking at my graph again, it says on the side of the column STD horsepower and STD Torque

just to make it clear, it only has the Flowmaster mufflers, and the stock catback(i think)

i think my owners manual says 5 Quarts

i will eventually probably put R.P. in the trans ane rear end as well

i was considering saving my money and just using a k&n on the stock intake tubing and not getting a cold air, thoughts?

the temperature inside the dyno room was about 65 degrees

just to clear things up..your actual horsepower numbers will be lower...with my dyno SAE= 247rwhp/290rwtq
STD = 255rwhp/297rwtq

the SAE is what alot of people go by , STD yields higher numbers...so you can subtract like 7(just an estimate) from your numbers and thats basically what you have SAE corrected

The car calls for 6 quarts, that what i run and thats what you should run. More oil = cooler oil and basically a cooler engine. Why do you think people like me and other people with hot rods go with 7 and 8 quart oil pans? More oil is more life, oil is the life of your engine just like your blood is your life. The more oil you have the longer it takes for the oil to break down, and again the more time the oil has to sit in the oil pan and cool down. Results in more power and a better combustion. (although slightly if any, depends on the engine) If you have a choice fill it to where it needs to be. and your right, OVERFILLING is bad, but filling to fords recommended LV IS NOT OVERFILLING. JMO.
