Hey guys i am in the market for a 99 up 4.6 and i just test drove one today. I had a standard 5.0 for a few years now and it seems the 5.0 pulls alot harder??? is a stock 4.6 slower then a stock 5.0 fox body?????? The bottem ends feels stronger int he 5.0 but does the 4.6 pull harder in the top end????

Also when i got home i thought to my self that i think the traction controll was on.... Will that mak a hugh power fdifference??

I don't know about the 5.0, but the 4.6 is kind of a dog.

The traction control will make ZERO power difference if you are not spinning the wheels. If it came on, you would know. If feels like someone shoved a potato up the exhaust pipes.

yeah traction control will make a big difference.

IF you are talking stock vs stock the new 4.6 rapes a 5.0. I mean a stock 5.0 is like a 15sec car and the 4.6 is low 14 or even high 13sec car.

Now once you start modifing there is still more potential natually asparated in the 5.0.

this is not always true. mine just shifting into second fairly hard will activate for a second even if the tires don't spin. Like stated above it applies rear brakes and cuts fuel so you don't have to be a rocket scientist to relize that is going to make the car slow.

I leave mine disable all the time because it sucks so bad. IF someone does not belive me take it to the track and see what you can get with the traction control enabled.

With the right bolt ons, the 4.6 GT is low 13 high 12 second car, proven time and time again. But I agree with all the H/C/I availale for the 5.0 it is the handsdown winner for affordable N/A performance.

I was mainly refering to the aftermarket head market for the 5.0. If someone ever makes a fire breathing set of heads that may change.

I've owned both: A 99+ Gt will walk a 5.0 HARD...I had no problem beating stock or slightly modified 5.0's in my 2000 GT...whether it is off the line or not...

The car you test drive could have been ragged in tune/traction control/or not really a GT :)

The 4.6L has somewhat of a deceiving powerband that "deceives" your SOTP...trust me a 99+ gt is much quicker than a 5.0...the MPH they trap tells all...

Since I've owned both (94 GT and 99GT) I can tell you two things, one the stock 5.0 is great in the lower rpms but, the stock 4.6 has more power from 3500-6000 rpms than the 5.0
The 4.6 is a very deceiving powerplant. Power is smooth and linear.
Noone has ever ridden in my GT and been blown away by the SOTP feeling, but the speed is evident.
Go buy one.

Yup!!

I own both as well.

The 5.0 feels a lot faster than the 4.6L.

But timeslips don't lie as my Gt was 1/2 to 3/4 second faster when stock.

But the 5.0 has the better aftermarket. For every 4.6L Mod, i can buy 2-3 5.0 mods.

Eeeeeasy now......Yeah, the '99-up 4.6's are faster in general, but not by that big of a margin. An Automatic Convertible 5.0L might run in the 15's, but an LX coupe will run as fast as a lot of '99-up GT's I've seen. I've seen some pretty slow '99-up 4.6L auto's too.

Bottow line
Yes, a stock 99-up GT is measurably quicker than a stock 5.0, but when the bolt ons start flying, the guy with the mod motor better have a higher limit on his Visa if he want's to stay ahead of the game.

5.0 vs 4.6

I owned a 1988 5.0 LX with a 5-speed and 2.73s it ran a 14.4@ 96mph I'm picking up a 1999 GT tomorrow. Driving the 5.0 feels stronger down low but the 4.6 pulls hard at the top were the 5.0 flattens out. Next spring I will be looking forward to running the 99Gt at the strip.
