my temp gauge hit L in normal.... And i was spewing coolant out from the overflow and the radiator cap.... i dont know y... the fan connector looked a little loose so i plugged it in... and started it back up... i held it at 4k for like 5 minutes and the needle moved back up to the L range... but i dont think there was enough coolant left to spew.... what do you guys think... heater core has been by passed... possibly a t-stat from sitting all that time??? :shrug: this is :bs: :bang:

I drove it around all day and got on it hard...no problems... i even lit up the tires a bit... then it starts this crap on the way to work... i turned off the car and it was spraying steaming ass hott coolant for about a minute
 
Adam, remember that the difference between having zero pressure in the coolng system and having 16 PSI (our stock rating) is about 45*F in the boiling point. Ergo, the pressure is really important. If your cap isnt holding pressure, there's an issue.

A sign of a bad cap is to hear boiling coolant in the reservoir after you shut the car off. But you should not have any coolant leaking around the radiator neck. On a cold system, pull the cap off and check the mating surfaces (the gasket on the cap, the cap's edges, etc, and the radiator neck). The necks have gotten out of plumb before. It's real hard to fix - most folks get a new radiator.

Lastly, if you really think the fan wasn't coming on and that was the primary issue, go over the fan connections again and examine the connector terminals themselves. They were a real problem area on these cars (I dont even use an OEM style plug anymore because it's such a POS). Ford should not have squeezed a compact connector onto the pancake motor IMHO. Other cars use a pigtail leaving the motor and the connector is off to the side (like a 4 banger 93-97 Probe fan motor is - I bet you have unplugged one or two of those in your day).

I'd top the coolant off and just let it idle in your garage and watch the gauge and system. If the fan is on and it's spewing from the radiator cap area, check the parts for plumb, replace the cap (to throw a part at it), etc. That might not even be the overall cause but it's a big deal IMHO.

i kid you not it was shooting out from under the rad cap and from the overflow cap... i lost about a gallon i think... it was bad... and it was steaming all over the place... the upper hose was ROCK hard... i burned my hand prettly bad trying to open the hood...

the problem with the fan is the female end is all sorts of cracked... i thought it might of jiggled out... but i really couldnt tell and i pushed it in b4 i turned back on the car again... so i lost all chance of seeing if that was the problem...

I got a new t-stat... ill pick up a new cap tomorrow... and let it idle and see what happens... it wasnt doing anything at idle... my grandfather came up and took it for a drive while i was working and it was staying nice and cool for him... so it might of been the fan...


Thanks again for the help man.... im just glad my car is almost back on the road... it sucks not having a car to drive... i just hope this isnt a big issue like a headgasket or something.... i didnt see any smoke out my exhaust though...
