ive been noticing a lot of people lately are buying this K&N product. are there any gains to be had, or does it just look cool? one person claimed a 9 rwhp gain. does anyone have dyno sheets to back their gains up? ive also been hearing lately that the FIPK is better than the C&L MAF. i originally wanted to get the C&L MAF w/ the C&L Inlet Pipe, but got scared when everyone started saying the MAF made the car run dangerously lean. whats everyone's take on this?

the quality of the C&L is better with the inlet tube. the gains of 9rwhp and 9rwtq are with the C&L maf and i have proof of dynosheet. But with the wrong combination the C&L makes the car run little lean and people **** in their pants when they hear that. it's not dangerously lean so don't worry about that. As for the FIPK i doubt you'll gain 9rwhp and that guy that claims is full of it. maybe 3rwhp at the most. FIPK is the best cai out there but as you should know CAI aren't worth it on our cars. Both on the c&L and K&N the inlet tubes are both i believe 100mm. GL

Are you sure about the size of the tube, John? 100mm? On both? I have the Trueflow on my 02, and it's big. But I've also seen the K&N and it didn't appear to be nearly as big.
The problem I have with my Trueflow is it get's so freakin hot, which can't be good for performance. I'd think the plastic, or whatever it's made of, K&N would resist heat absorbtion a bit better.
This would be a good test - testing the heat of the various tubes on the market...and the associated performance gain/loss. (And, please, please, tell me my C&L is OK...I've already removed the C&L MAF and thrown in a box of junk parts!!! :bang: )

yeah bro, i'd take that drive over to the shop, not the one you went to the first time but the shop you were talking about before that's a drive away to get it retuned with the accufab plenum/tb and the C&L maf. Hope it's not damaged man. The least you could've done was sell it. See how the new tune works out for you.

edit: i'll have to get a confirmation on that from my friend that has the FIPK on the tubing size. but i think it was 100mm on both C&L's inlet pipe and fipk's inlet pipe. double checking and i'll do a little ghetto heat test on the inner surface of both the tubes.

daaaaaayyyyuuuuum!!!! thats an amazing gain for just a FIPK. Trinity, did you have any other mods other than that intake at the time you dynoed? youre really pushin me towards that K&N product.

i wonder if he had anything else during that dynorun... but whatever i still believe you trinity :D

Is it the GEN2 FIPK that seals against the hood? Maybe this is the key to the nice 9.3 HP gain Trinity_GT got above? Trinity, is this what you have?
The OEM tube is definately restrictive. You'd think Ford, along with the other manufacturers would figure this out and stop putting a accordian tube in there. And, if you remove the tube, you'll see a pretty big and deep dent on the underside of it near the TB...this can't be good for flow.

I like my FIPK. It has something that I dont believe the other kits have, but I could be wrong. The FIPK as part of the assembly includes a velocity stack type thing. It fits on the tube where the filter bolts on. It is sort of like a funnel that smooths and increases the velocity of the air going into the tube.

Oh, yeah, over to Orlando, home of SCT :hail2: :nice: . I need to survive an upcoming vacation first ($$$). I didn't really throw it - I just put away...for now. When I do get retuned, it'll hopefully be with the C&L MAF (unless they talk we out of it - hey, they're 'the guys who know'!)
Right now, it's running great, not missing the C&L MAF one bit. It took about 5 days to return to it's old self (At first, after the swap, it seemed as if it had lost some power in the bottom range - now, it's like the C&L is still there). I am quite happy, for now, but forever in a quest for more HP!!! :D

One of the Mustang Mags said something about the velocity ring on the FIPK, noting that some serious engineering went into it...I'd agree. It's all about the flow and it's a science.

Nope, that was it. My first two dyno runs were bone stock and then with the air silencer removed. I then installed the K&N and went back and dynoed again. The K&N setup was the first mod on the car. Later I installed some pulleys (got another 4.5 or so from them) and the latest is the Accufab 70mm TB and plenum (not yet dynoed).

The FIPK is indeed the type that has the shield around the filter that "seals" loosely to the hood. When the hood is opened, the filter is plainly visible and when it's closed, the hood forms the top of a "box" which gets most of its air from the hole in the inner fender where the air silencer used to sit.
