K&N FIPK opinions

I'd like to get a Dyno on someone's stock car with my setup. i have the trueflow inlet w/ the FIPK2 Filerhousing on the end. I'd be interested in knowing if the plastic intake tube on the FIPK2 gains more or less than the one on the TrueFlow.

The main advantage of the K&N FIPK over other induction kits is it utilizes a plastic intake tubing where most others use one that is made of some sort of metal. Metal will reach hotter temperatures than plastic and therefore can increase the air temperature of the air flowing to the intake. Hotter air = less o2. Less o2 = less power basically put. If the trickflow design uses metal tubing, then I'de ditch it. If it uses one that is plastic, then use it.

The FIPK is indeed the type that has the shield around the filter that "seals" loosely to the hood. When the hood is opened, the filter is plainly visible and when it's closed, the hood forms the top of a "box" which gets most of its air from the hole in the inner fender where the air silencer used to sit.

I will buy that. My dyno at Hypertech with the only power adder being Flows was dead on 228 at the rear wheels. the hp gain is excellent for the cash spent. i will be putting one on my wife' s car after reading this post.

sorry guys--but the air moves entirely too fast for the material of the tube to make a difference in the temperature before it hits the motor--which means--it really is the velocity of the flow and about constant pressure and velocity with minimal turbulance

I used to have the BBK chrome CAI on my car and once it got hot, I couldn't touch the damn thing it was so hot.

This one isn't chrome.. its more.. aluminum.. i guess.. but i can make a pass down the track and it still be just as warm as the plastic one. On long drives both are just as hot as well. I dunno.. I'll just have to take it off, put it on a stock GT and Dyno it.

i got it. FIPK's plastic tube is roughly 88mm and the C&L pipe is 100mm. Both while engine is running the interior surface of both the tubes are equal. Even if there was a relative difference between the surface temperature of the tubes interior i doubt it'll make a big difference in the air going into the engine's intake mani. :banana:

I built my own. I took some ABS pipe and ran it straight from the throttle body to the MAF, with a K&N filter sitting down in the fenderwell. It works great. Just a little hard to get it to line up right. Cost me about $30 from Lowes.

what exactly is ABS pipe? what material, is it flexible, etc. did you notice any SOTP power increase from your home version? also, there are some hoses that connect to the pipe (forgive me for i dont know what they are, but there are two i think). how did you rig them up or connect them back? do you have any pics? sorry for the barrage of questions, but i appreciate the help.

No problem. ABS is basically like PVC, only stronger. I used a 3" ABS pipe, and connected it to the MAF and throttle body using 3" rubber couplings. I used a steel threaded nipple to hook up the PCV hose, and the oxygen sensor just threaded into the coupling by the MAF sensor. I'll post some pics or something this afternoon or tonight. Also, go here, allfordmustangs.com that's where I got my info. I did notice a SOTP difference, espiecially at higher RPM, plus now I can run midgrade since the filter is sitting in the fenderwell. (Before it was in the engine bay sucking in hot air) Hope this helps out, and I'll get some pics up later.

It's all aluminum, but still I can't believe you can put your hand on your Trueflow pipe...? Damn man, I'd have no skin left. Of course, I'm driving a black GT, in Florida...and it's been getting really freakin warm lately...

The K&N FIPK does open up the intake, in replacing the stock tube in which you can not pass a tennis ball through, due to a molded restriction in the tube to clear the fuel injectors.
