Its really amazing, how much they changed the engine from when it was in our car, besides the block its self, everything is different with the 97' explorer engine. as far as the iginition system, that new system looks cool, with teh coil packs and all, but wont work with our car's computers. Anyway, i was looking at the injectors today while i was switching the fuel rails, and wow, what a difference in design. On our cars, there sorta fat, and have a smallish tip that is sorta rounded. on the explorer, there the same color, but much more skinny. When you look at the squirter end, what a big difference, the explorer ones are about 1-1/2 times larger at the end, and sorta funnel outwards. also, there is 4 small holes in teh bottom opposed to ours with one. Since these are different i changed to the origional explorer fuel pressure regulator. Hmm, wonder if they can support more hp or something. anyone know why they look so different. just wondering

i would bet it is for better atomization and mixing.

I run the Explorer injectors in my car. They atomize better and flow slightly better thean the Stang style. The Stang injectors are "pintel" style Bosch Design II units and the Explorer are "disc" style Bosch Design III units. The Navigator blue bodied injectors are 24# and both they and the Explorer use the exact same electrical connector as ours.

Is this style/type of injector 100% compatible (a drop in replacement) with our cars, wiring, and EEC-IV? Is this a desireable upgrade? Tom says they flow slightly better - what does that specifically mean? More lbs-hr than ours? Do they flow more consistantly throughout it's duty cycle range? Better flow at small duty cycle and/or pulsewidths?

Same dimensions?

Yes, they are a direct replacement - nothing needs to be done but put them in and plug them up. They flow 1-2lbs more @ 44 psi than the pintel style. Like everything else, the flow varies a little from injector to injector.

To clairify, does this mean that at 39psi they flow 0 lbs more?

That depends totally on the individual injector - like many other parts - you can't generalize at 39psi. The injectors remanufacturers indicate that the disc injectors flow slightly more on average at their rated working pressure max of 44psi. Pintel 19# types flow 20-22# and the 19# discs flow 21-24#. If you have to run more than 44psi on an injector, it's time to start planning for the next step up. They'll work at higher pressures than 44psi but the effort to open, the closing speed and the flow patterns start getting affected when you go higher - so why not use them in the ranges they were designed for?
