i installed a tko-600 in my 89 mustang. drove fine for a hundred miles or so, then speedo and odometer stopped working at the same time. i looked at the gears in the tranny and they were both fine. when i took the cable off, there was a 3 inch "rod" that goes into the "column" that the gear is attached to. is that "rod" suppose to be attached to the speedometer cable? if so, then i most likely need to replace the cable. if not, then maybe the cluster is bad?

Try attaching a cordless drill to the trans end of the speedo cable. Run the drill and see if your speedo works. If it doesn't, then you most likely have a cable issue. It could also be a bad gear inside of the speedo head itself. If the speedo works when you spin the cable, it could be an issue with the speedo drive gear inside the trans. The drive gear in my TKO 600 broke after 100 miles. I was able to stick my finger inside the speedo cable hole in the trans and reach the drive gear. If the drive gear spins feely on the output shaft, then it's busted
