Let's discuss an engine that overheated.......

So my electric fan controller took a dump on me Saturday while the car was in the hands of the car wash so I had no idea there was a problem until it was too late. The engine boiled over when the car was shut off. Aside from a potential blown head gasket, what kind of other damage can be cused by an overheated engine? Could my rings be shot, pistons scorched, etc? I know I had to run tests and diags, but I wouldn't mind a little foundation of info so I can recognize a problem quicker. Thanks.

first of all if you blew a head gasket you would deffinatly know it.

overheating can cause the heads to warp. I have ran hot a few times but i have shut it down at the point of overflow. I have never had any problems with ring or piston damage.

about the worst thing i have had hapen on an overheat was on my 96 gt the waterpump went out on the interstate and the plastic radiator neck broke off.

Iron heads, so I'm not TOO concerned about warpage.

You can break piston rings as the pistons expand past their intended size. Rule of thumb when installing new rings is .004" of end gap per inch of piston diameter. On 5.0's that equates to .016" of end gap. Assuming your's is slightly more, due to normal wear on the cylinder walls, you should be ok - to a point.

Excess heat = reduced oil viscosity = excess wear on moving parts.

When my '69 302 engine was bored .030" over, the machine shop told me that the engine had been overheated because the cylinders were not true. The walls of the cylinders had shifted and were a little hourglass shaped. He was able to fix it when he bored the block.

Check your compression and keep an eye on your oil pressure to make sure it's the same as before. If both these things check out fine, you should be alright.

Cool. I use Mobil 1, and it was brand new. Hopefully it offered up a bit more protection. This engine only has about 13,000 miles on it.
