Took my car to a mechanic due to a ticking noise that was coming from the engine. He told me that this is the lifters that is causing this. he put some type of lifter solution??? and the the ticking is now intermittent all the time is just some times. when i start the car until i heats up then goes away and some times when i am @ a stop light. This is might be a stupid question but if the lifters are intermittently making noise how long do i have until something bad happens????

Any time an engine is making a noise it shouldn't you are playing Russion Roulette. No mechanic can estimate how long an engine will last making improper noises and one who claims he can should be avoided. You should fix your problem as soon as possible or accept the fact that the engine could go at anytime.
The last time I ignored a ticking because it was inconvenient to fix I lost the whole engine very shortly afterwards. 65fastback2+2 had a lifter ticking problem also and it turned out to be completely shot cam bearings making the oil pressure so low that the lifters could not stay pumped up properly. If he had not brought his car to me to change the cam and lifters when he did I don't think the engine would have lasted much longer.

I had a ticking noise as well. The day I took my car to the mechanic was the day my engine died. Now i have to get a completely new engine since my block is already 40 over. Take care of this as soon as possible.
