Lightning MAF

Preface:
I got this car at auction a handfull of months ago so I did not meet the previous owner or get to talk to a dealer. My Mods are the FIPK, a Lightning MAF apparently, unknown Cat-Back maybe H-pipe could be gutted cats, 3:55s,

Story:
Took my K&N FIPK apart yesterday to clean the filter and and look at gutting the MAF and discovered that my MAF is not the stocker unit. Best I can tell is that I have The 90MM lightning MAF. Now what? :scratch:

Could this MAF have been included with the K&N FIPK? DOes the K&N FIPK include a MAF?

I have read that big MAFs without tuning do nothing to promote power and may actually pull power. Is this right?

If it is the case that this thing has not been tuned in and needs to be I will be getting in the next few weeks a Diablo (thank you SN AW PH CH et al! :) ) can I use this to tune in the "new" MAF?

How or more to the point Where is the MAFs size measured? I measured mine at the edge of the inlet, right where it connects to the filter. Measured 90mm exactly. Do you measure here or farther in the tube?

For anybody with a lightning MAF does it have any stamps or part numbers on it to help identify it?

chances are you're tune is off due to the LMAF. you are probably running lean because of it. an LMAF is overkill for your application. i suggest that you find a stock replacement.
 
It would have had to have been tuned in order to use the Lightning MAF. To my knowledge, there is a different transfer function that needs to be programmed within the tune in order for it to work at all. So if it's there, he would have had to have had this done from the start. To determine its girth, just measure it across from its smallest diameter. Most meters (Lightning included) will flare out in order to scoop the air and transition it into the venturi.

This looks EXCATLY like mine but mine measures 90mm at the widest point. I think i eyballed it at around 80 to 85mm at the thinest point but this was strictly eyeballed as I could not get my ruler into the opening.
 
why would this guy have put this thing on here? every post i have read on the mafs indicates that the stocker is good to 400hp and going bigger just doesnt show any real gain...:bang:

Probably didn't know any better. See if someone here will trade you with a little cash for a stock Mustang meter. Bill Fisher will likely do it.

...can this maf be tuned in at all? maybe dialing a little more fuel?i do not want to spend any money i dont have to. at 80mm (my new measurement) its only a hair larger then the stocker. any hope? if there is none what my best bet to catchup with the increased airflow that is not an SC or turbo?

Perhaps its an earlier Lightning Mass Air meter. Pre-01 Lightnings used 80mm units.
 
First, If you had a 90mm LMAF without the tune to compensate for it, the car would be very lean and would throw a code because the fuel trims would be at their max. I have both MAF curves in front of me, and at part throttle you'd be about 30% lean, and around wot for a n/a car it is more like 40% lean. If you have one, the car has been tuned for it. Contact RandyStinchcomb to find out exactly what you have before ordering anything like a predator. And no the predator can't adjust for the MAF directly, but you can get a custom tune loaded into it with the correct MAF curve.

to tune for the MAF, you need either a dealer, Diablo or SCT to do it, or you need the SCT Pro Racer package. simply adding fuel to a off-the-shelf Diablo tuner will not do it correctly. it will work fine as long as the tune is calibrated for that MAF.

like stalling out at idle? i do not have this. my only real complaint with my current set up is weak and occasionally inconsistent power.
