ive always wanted to be faster than dad and so far it was going great. i beat his time in the 1/4 but he got a lightning so thats not gonna happen now. i want to beat that thing. any ideas to beat him? i have longtubes x pipe bassani mufflers, springs, and control arms. engine wise, what upgrades will make it possible to beat him? best time is a 13.3 and im hoping to run atleast a high 12 or so.

I would start with gears, it will make a HUGE difference!

If you're running 13.3's, you should be able to at least run with him now. Unless it's been worked over a little, stock 2nd Gen Lightnings were a mid-13-second truck for the most part.

You could run a mild shot of NOS on the engine, to help squeak by into the high 12s. I agree with guydon gears would make a hugh difference. The more info provided, the easier it is to get feedback. For starters like what heads, cam, mileage, gears, maf/injectors,trans, air filter(K&N), and tires (drag radials/slicks?) are you running?

My old lightning ran 13.50's pretty consistently with only nitto drag radials on it. Truck was stock besides that. With a pulley/tune/exhaust i could see them running mid to high 12's easy.

Some nitrous or a blower would be the easiest way to stay ahead of the curve.

What year is your dad's lightning? Also, I take from your post that your engine is mostly stock? If so, what is your budget? The explorer top-end swap is common and usually cheap upgrade. Though there are two similiar, but very different set-ups. One has the gt40ps, needs special headers from mac and non-internal egr intake found late 97 and up explorers. The other has the F3ZE gt40s with the internal egr intake, which came in 95-early 97 explorers. All these can be found in a junkyard for a petty reasonable price.

my lightning went 13.3ish stock on F1's

went 12.76@107 on nittos a upper pulley (9lbs total boost stock was 8) and a tune
went 12.83@107 on F1s with those mods.

if you got any questions about lightnings lemme know i work for a pretty well known lightning tuner part time

Personally unless he has the money to buy a built motor i wouldnt add anymore boost. Lightnings are well known for not having the strongest bottom ends. But if you wanted to just do the normal bolt ons. CAI, Pullys, exh., cutsom tune, etc etc but make sure he gets it tuned if he adds more boost or youll sling every rod in it. I got some slicks on rims for a lightning if u want them there practically brand new (truck threw a rod and broke the crank in 3 places)

tuning is a MUST on them. but a buddy of mine has put his stock long block truck into the 10's so they arent THAT weak

Good luck, beating him. I guess it depends on what is done to the truck.

From personally experience I will not run Lightnings anymore. There are several 700hp plus trucks running around my area.

bunch of them in the mid-low 11's on stock long blocks also. there not as weak as once thought. a lot had to do with pegged MAF's and stuff like that causing them to blow but its known at what point it needs to be swapped out and you always need to keep an eye on it.
