long term storage

I am changing duty stations, from San Diego to Japan. And I want to keep my stang I will be in Japan for three years, my question is what should I do as far as having the stang be in the same or close to running condition as I left it. Should I drain all the fluids and put it on blocks? I heard that this was not a good idea as it could dry rot. Originally, I was thinking about flying back stateside every 6 months and driving it. Is that a good idea, are there any long term storage places in San Diego that could start my car up every once and a while? My car is a 2002 gt with about 16,000 miles on it only mods are flow masters AT full cat back exhaust, steeda tri ax shifter, and a bbk cai. And no I don’t have anyone I could trust to take care of it while I’ am gone.

I agree, a long time. I had my 68 left behind for only 6 months, and had my brother drive it every now and then. Add fuel stabilizer for sure. Disconnect the battery. Car cover! I would also change the oil and antifreeze to prevent corrosion while stored. Just my 2 cents.

The military will store your vehicle for you in a "professional" storage unit where they will start it up once a month, move it (to avoid flat spots on the tires) and cycle the heat/AC. You can even check out the status on www.whereismypov.com

However... I did that when I came over here to Korea with my 2003 Mach I. After 4 months, I read on line "car will not start - will contact owner" Two more months went by without a call, so I called the Vehicle Processing Center. Turns out the broke my key and lost the chip that allows the car to start. Then I had 2 options: 1) Leave the car in storage without it starting for 3 years or 2) Take it out of storage, have Ford fix it, then ship it to Korea... Now I have one of 3 Machs in Korea...

Oh, when I got it back, they had scratched it, broke the radiator cover, and left tools under the hood

You could take your chances with the military or take it to Japan with you - if you can. The steering wheel will be on the wrong side, but it might be fun.

If you want to keep the stang do what the above people have recomended. But honestly 3 years is a loooooong time to have a toy laying around. Why not try and get the money for it, put that in a bank acount and let the interest on the money you put in it pile up and get a new one when you get back!?

Im transfering to San Diego In January, I'll start it up and keep it running for you. ha. seriously though, i am going to s.d. for my A school, and I think im going to take my cobra out there. Do you know of any mustang clubs or good shops out there?

I was rolling with a car club called STANG EMPIRE really cool cats. That was this past JUNE before i left for deployment They are based out of chula vista. wicked stangs are out here to the guy who started wicked stangs was stationed on a ship in san diego last year i heard.
